Scott,
I would only be able to speculate, and I would not be able to pin anything on a single reason. I'm sure there is some truth in both of your examples, and I could go on to name another dozen reasons, if I thought about it. I'm not sure that it really matters, because it is going to be case by case. Thank you for your curiosity, but I'd rather not take this any further down a path that is not the focus of the original post. It may be something for another thread. ~michael

Perhaps if we took it as a lesson to take the time to really know each other better it would be smart. We get so caught up in what we disagree about as opposed to what we all have in common.

I know lots of young magicians in my area who are in their late 70's. I also know lots of old magicians in my area who are in their early 50's. IMHO age is a state of mind, and I do not plan to slow down until my body, mind, or my wife tells me that I can no longer keep up. Don't worry be happy

Back in the Army (and this is a long story, so I'll cut to the chase), I was in a production of "Dracula Baby," a musical comedy. I played Renfield, the lunatic. Ont of the numbers I did with Dracula had a line like "Do Unto Others Before They Do Unto You." It was totally a spoof of the golden rule and actually pretty funny given who was singing it.
Reading the posts above, I have to wonder...

Complaining about others may be a hint that you might be ready to seriously consider your problem.
And how does this help other magicians? Does something you feel is wrong become less so if others commiserate?

Clinton,
I'm sorry your friend died and sorry he did not find the Café a welcoming place. It is a mixed bag of incredibly helpful and supportive folks and a few part time jerks. Unfortunately it is easier to remember the jerks. I've worked with Kids in the past and they always made more progress when given positive reinforcement for what they were doing right, tempered with a COUPLE of comments about what could improve (even if there were many places that needed improvement). Some of the "advice" here is given just to make the giver feel superior. We should consider if our criticism will bring about positive outcomes or just turn the listener off. -Mary Mowder |
