I cannot describe the bundle of emotions this story has stirred in me.

This should be mandatory reading for those who persist in believing that man can't possibly cause irreparable harm to our eco-system. And as this story shows, AGW is only a part of the damage we've done and continue to do.
(Parenthetically, I've still heard no answers regarding the reasons for sea-level rise or any indication that it is caused by anything but thermal expansion and the melting of land ice, consistent with the AGW model.) |

It's not like a red tide, but it may wind up acting like a red tide. Or it may host something which not only thrives on plastic but also metabolizes greenhouse gasses.
iirc plastic islands made the news around 1990. What's new?

Now, 16 years later the Pacific trash island is roughly double the surface area of Texas. Apparently the amount of plastic in the oceans has increased by two orders of magnitude (i.e. more than 100x but less than 1000x) in the past 4 decades. That's what's new.

The solution will be, when someone figures out how to harvest the plastic island, and recycle it into a product that can be sold. We'll soon thereafter be learning that we need to provide taxpayer-funded subsidies to an industry that is having trouble making it, because the raw materials it needs have suddenly become scarce.

I'm sure the sea levels will get corrected and returned to the exact level they are supposed to be at. No worries there. Don't know what that level is but Obama knows and he promised to bring them back down!

So you still haven't bothered to do any research, then.

This story shows that AGW is only part of the damage done? That's funny, I don't see anything in this story about AGW at all.
I do see a tragedy that I would strongly support spending all the money wasted on AGW research, etc. used to help clean up. "World spends $1 BILLION a day on global warming" Read more: http://dailycaller.com/2013/10/23/world-......igAg5IzJ I think 1 Billion a day could go a long ways towards cleaning up and improving the Ocean. |

There are many AGW opponents who honestly believe that God won't let us damage the planet. If that's the case, is He going to do the cleanup? |

The saddest part for me is that the harvesting of the fish is so wasteful. ALL fish are caught but only a few are saved to satisfy the craving of a minority. The other fish could feed the multitudes of underfed.
No profit in that, of course. So, it is not AGW that is the problem, it is greed ... and Terra will survive -- only man won't be part of the plan.

Locally two Oarfish have been found along the beach.
Scientists called the first discovery a once in a life time moment, but the second discovery a few days later has caused us to question it as mere coincidence. The Oarfish swim at depths of 3,000 feet or lower. These guys never surface for anything according to marine biologists. In Japan several Oarfish were found along the beach just a few days before a large earthquake. The earthquake idea hasn't got me totally convinced, in lieu of increased fracking around the world. Hi Magnus,
Quote:
the decline of the caribou population is a serious concern in the Arctic From the graph you posted, it looks like the caribou population, at least as recorded, rose substantially from the late 1970s to about 1994, then leveled off, and since 2000, has been slowly going back to 1970 levels. I'm not sure I understand the scale of the graph, so I don't know what the numbers actually are. But it hardly looks catastrophic. |
