Hi Paul, great to see you here.
You've written, books and created lots of magic stuff. So how do you create an effect? Is there a process you go through? Do you purpose in your mind to like: "I must think of 3 effects a day before I go to bed" attitude?

There really isn't a process. I do set aside time each day to write though - With the Pro-Series books I spend time working on those daily. I do set myself a target to create. I have note books filled with ideas - some so wild they won't see light of day. Often I'm influenced by wants and needs. If I need to create something for a specific show then that forces me to create. I don't sit down and go, right I need to come up with something today. I might get inspired by a piece of music or something outside of magic that I see, then develop the idea but in most cases I create because it's something I need. Often I'll bounce ideas off friends and the end result will be countless hours or hard work.

I simply make time. With a two year old and having just moved from NZ to Canada to live there is a lot going on. When everybody is asleep that's when I do my work - usually late at night or first thing in the morning - then my days are free to spend time with my family and it clears my mind. I find turning off my mind is a good thing - which is why I love being with my son. I concentrate on him and what he's doing and that helps.
When I focus on a project I am focused 100% on that. I try not to have 100 other things floating around. When you focus on one thing you can find more ideas or concepts pop in to your mind.

There is a great book by Peter Loughren on creativity and magic - well worth checking out.
