As Bob pointed out in a different thread, not charging men and everyone else that doesn't need maternity care isn't fair because it makes it un-affordable for those that do need it.
So I thought we could make a game out of it called, 'Hey! That's not fair!' You come up with something that's not fair and then propose the law or solution to make it fair. I'll start with two. 1. I don't think it's fair that only people who live in flood danger areas have to buy flood insurance. I think they should pass a law that EVERYONE has to purchase flood insurance. Everyone knows that's how to make insurance affordable for everyone and to be fair. That's how insurance works! 2. I went to get my hair cut. I noticed that getting my hair cut was much cheaper than when my wife goes cause she also get's it colored, etc. So I thought, "Hey! That's not fair!" I think they should pass a law that everyone who get's their hair cut has to pay for styling and hair coloring whether or not they need it. That way, it'll be cheaper for everyone! Your turn! |

Your second law isn't fair. Why do only the people who get their hair cut have to pay? Bald people and longhairs should have to pay for haircuts, too.

I'll thank you not to misquote me. I never stated that it was "fair" or "unfair." I simply pointed out that spreading the risk is a fundamental principle in insurance. A larger pool results in lower overall rates.

Not among people who don't have ANY risk (like men getting pregnant).

I don't have children in school. Therefore, according to this logic, I shouldn't have to pay property taxes to support education. It's not fair! Wahhh!

Some of the taxes I pay are go to support the local library system. But many of the librarians don't book my shows. Hey! That's not fair!

But if you want to talk about "fair," men are the primary cause of maternity in the first place. Isn't it fair that they should contribute a bit more than sperm?

It isn't fair that after being born in the greatest country in the world that my ancesters helped create and my father fought for in world ward II, the country that has provided me opportunties that I could never have gotten in other parts of the world, the country that has allowed me to have a nice house, a great family, and a rewarding career....that in exchange for providing me with a life that others would kill for...that I need to actually give something back.
It is not fair that I just can't take take take and not have to give anything back. How unfair is it that I have to contribute to the society that gave me the wonderful life I have. |

Slide- I think you've pointed out the fundamental difference in outlook that accounts for the big division in this country. For some it is all about "me," the individual. For others, it is more about "us," our society as a whole.

Being an individualistic society gave us the inventiveness to become a military superpower and it's given us the divisiveness that could lead to our demise as any kind of power.
