Once, when I was 23 years old, a store owner wouldn't sell me beer until I went all the way back home, found my driver's license, and returned to the store with it.

That's because he could have gone to jail had you been under 21. Good for him! One day you will be glad you look young for your age...

Humorous.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I was gonna ask what your point was. Then I got it. Sorry. I just got back from exercising and was tired. The guy was obviously a racist.

Once, when I was about 23 years old (and looked all of 17), I bought alcohol without being carded, while the gentleman in queue before me, who looked decidedly older than 21, did get carded for his alcohol purchase.
Perhaps that he was buying a case of Coors and I was buying a bottle of Grand Marnier figured into the clerk's decisions. |

In most states and in most liquor stores and bars there is no ID requirement if you are obviously over 21. (In Washington, for example, bartenders and store clerks are required to ask for ID for alcohol and tobacco purchases if the customer appears to be under thirty.)
Why doesn't the same rational apply in the case of the 101 year old guy who couldn't vote the other day because he didn't have an ID- even though everyone knew him and he'd been registered and voting at the same place all of his adult life. (Of course he's a registered Democrat, so that might have had something to do with it.) |

So clerks are undoubtedly engaged in profiling to determine whether or not somebody "looks" a certain age. Since profiling is an unacceptable practice, in those states, the federal government should mandate that the I.D. requirement be done away with altogether, and if a few children here or there obtain alcohol, it's ok, because it ensures that nobody who is over the age of 21 will be denied.

If I ever write that teen comedy screenplay, I'm going to have a high school student shave himself a receeding hairline in an attempt to score beer.

But I bet he doesn't get carded. Is that fraud? I guess we have to pass more stringent ID laws.

I get green carded all the time, boy is that ever annoying.
Why does it matter where you were born, I'm here now right? What difference does it make? Now hand me my liquor! |

In Pigeon Forge TN, everyone is supposed to be carded. It's written in the law.

What are the giveaways that let you know someone is over thirty? Really?
You realize, don't you, that the "appears less than thirty" allows for a leeway of nine years, since the legal age is twenty-one?" Not many observant people here I guess. When I buy cigarettes, the check out terminal says "Show clerk ID." I look at the clerk and say, "My face is my ID." They laugh and the sale is processed. The fact is that what I wrote earlier is the law in most states for both cigarette and alcohol sales. If your grandfather walked into a place where you were tending bar, do you think you could safely and legally assume he was 21? The sad thing about common sense is that it's not very common. |
