Hey guys xmas is coming soon !
It would be great to share our christmas routines here to help anyone who wants fresh ideas for our upcoming shows in our churches ?! One great routine is given by Duane Laflin in grand magic magazine december 2012 "his name shall be called" based on Isaiah 9 names of God. All the silks representing the names of God (prince of peace, counselor, and so on...) disappear and are transformed Into one Jesus silk. Jesus being the one announced by the prophet. And yours ?? Thx and God bless ! |

If only it felt like Christmas. I live in a country that is SO secularized they even ruined the feast of St. Nicholas by calling it "Sinterklaas." In my faith, St. Nicholas is a VERY important figure and here in this country he is reduced to this man throwing gifts to kids accompanied by his "companions." These companions are called "Zwarte Peet." I find it offensive. They look like the awful minstrel show caricatures from the antebellum South.
What's worse is that "Sinterklaas" is more important than Christmas!! It took me literally TWO years to find even ONE image of the Birth at Bethelehem and that was in a Portuguese Café. The people here also have the days after Easter (Pascha in my faith) and Pentecost off, as well as Ascension Thursday, and the worst part? Very few even know what Pentecost or The Ascension IS! So my favorite routine would be one that would in a blink wake these people up to the true meaning of Christmas. I apologize to Dutch magicians reading this as I know that some Dutch celebrate the Birth of Christ, but, by and large, Christmas has become even more commercialized than in the United States. Please forgive the rant sisters and brothers. I do not mean to sound righteous. Humbly in Christ, Vlad |

My favorite is a card-match routine by Jim Scott.
As 2 piles of cards are mixed according to a volunteer's liking. The top cards from each pile are put together. The routine continues until all of the cards are matched together. When they are turned over to reveal what is on each card, they are each an old testiment prophecy about the events of Christmas that match the new testament events about Christmas. It's all written up in Jim's book "the Card Match Principle" |

I like using ventriloquist routines.
One starts with Nigel using the announcer/echo voice.....(thank you Bill Boley) In this corner of the Church...the Savior of the World.....JESUS CHRIST. Haven't done it in awhile, but used to use two puppets, Nigel and his Grand Puppet, Papa Charlie. Nigel would ask his grandfather..er grandpuppet, the meaning of Christmas. Be safe, well and creative. Harris reader & righter

I agree Vlad. I personally find it offensive when I see Christian children who believe in Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. No matter what excuses for it we are teaching our children a lie. My children were raised with the truth, and has served them well. They were also taught that parents teach their children that Santa is real and it is not their place to correct their friends who do believe in Santa and the Easter Bunny.
We still celebrate Christmas and Easter. They also understand that Jesus wasn't born on December 25, but it's the day we celebrate His birth. We have endured criticism from others for our choice, but the results have been spiritually rewarding for our family. It was a choice I do not regret, nor do I condem or judge others who raise their children believing in myths. They do know who St. Nick is though. The real one that is.

Chist Mass
not X mass yes I agree. Parody as...Tis the season to get into debt.... or I'm dreaming of a White Sale in December or ____ In my vent routine above, I interrupt Nigel, and tell him that we don't need to have a lot of hoopala to celebrate the birth of our savior. The routine is funny and serious. It ends with the audience singing to my harmonica music of either Silent Night or O Holy Night.

Ironic correction;
It is Christ Mass not Chist Mass Actually there is an argument that Xmas is an accurate abbreviation. The "X" comes from the Greek letter Chi, which is the first letter of the Greek word ×ñéóôüò, which in English reads as "Christ". It was a common and acceptable abbreviation at the turn of the century. I prefer to keep the Christ in Christmas, but the X does not always indicate a secular abbreviation.

I was watching a commercial here the other night and in it you see one of those snowglobes and the music playing is a (secular) Christmas carol. The camera pans up to a guy holding an axe. Basically, the commercial is about being tired of what (to these people) seems like a traditional Christmas. So the guy smashes the snowglobe and then it becomes an advertisement for a huge rave party. THAT is how bad it has become. While I am not condemning, I do wish I could shake people up and just scream, "for ONE day, can you not forget the sex, parties, and drinking, and celebrate the REAL reason for Christmas??!!" When I spent my first Christmas here, we went to my girlfriend's parents on Christmas day. They know I am Christian and ironically, they were both Christians and even baptized their daughter (my g/f) as a Christian. They basically said, "we don't believe in all of this myth. Christmas is a day for families to get together." The Netherlands was once a very devout Christian country and in the southernmost provinces there is still at least a tiny sense of Christ as there are shrines to Him throughout the farm provinces and crosses and crucifixes are seen everywhere. But, here in Rotterdam, and the other major cities: Amsterdam, Den Haag (The Hague), Utrecht, Maastricht, etc., nothing. It saddens me that a once devout country now largely has no idea what Christmas, Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost are. I love my girlfriend and her children, but, folks, I feel like my very soul is dying. I know God is here as He is everywhere, but, I feel like a spiritual stranger in a strange secular land. The local Orthodox church here has at best only 50 parishioners, and I live in a city of 750,000!! In Pittsburgh, where I am from and metro population wise is similar in size, there are 70 Orthodox churches and an uncountable number of other Christian churches. So my American friends, while secularism has infected America, be thankful you can still see Christ in Christmas. Do all you can to fight secularism; do not allow America to become like this. To Dutch magicians reading this, I do not hate your country. In fact, I love the people, but, I do loathe the secualrism. One last note all: This year The Netherlands crowned its first king in 250 years. Attached to the back of the Dutch Reformed church where he was crowned was a marijuana shop!! Unbelievable!! This shop is actually built into the back of the church edifice. I need your prayers folks, please, and again, sorry for the rant. Humbly in Christ, Vlad |

Prayers sent for you and the country you are in. One of the ministries I'm involved in does a lot of work in "undeveloped" parts of the world. We forget that those places are not the only ones that need The Gospel. I feel that worldly temptations are a bigger problem the more developed a place becomes.

I use two alternatives for the Christian part of my show
(1) Christmas story bag with a puppet whispering in my ear and turning the bag inside out; (2) Real meaning of Christmas by Duane Laflin I've also made up the Angel's Motto cards from the December 2012 "Grand Magic" Magazine, but won't use it in the same show as (2).

Nope. Big difference between being offended ( inwardly) and judging (outwardly)

What do you mean? There is great information here for creating yourself some great material to build a routine on. Talk about how Christmas is becoming so secular, and how we need to worship God, not Santa Claus, St. Nick, or Kris Kringle. I see using the Bashful Bunny method to remind everyone what Christmas means. That's just the first idea that comes to mind just based on the comments so far.
You can talk about how we can be like Christmas tree's. We decorate ourselves up to look attractive to others and take pride in showing off everything we have done for ourselves. Then, when the season is over, (death) we are stripped of all we are accomplished, thrown into the fire, because the tree was cut from its root. Something like that.

Edec -
One of the routines that I've done in my gospel shows at Christmas time is the visible colour painting, with breakaway crayon. I have a volunteer to help me. For the insert, it's a Christmas tree that colours in (these were available years ago from Hank Lee). I tell the audience about an idea that I got from a friend of mine. He always set up his nativity scene under his Christmas tree, because that is where you put presents, and Jesus is the very best gift of all (John 3:16 talks about God the Father "giving" his Son, for example). And of course, you can expand on that. Another routine that I've done in my gospel show at Christmas time is a dove pan production combined with balloon hats. I have 3 children come up and help me. I turn them into the "magi" by dressing them in balloon hats. Then I read the story of the magi from the Bible (Matthew 2). I produce 3 items in the dove pan. Gold beads (representing gold, a gift for a king), an empty purfume bottle (representing frankincense, a gift for a diety), and some plastic leaves (representing myrrh, used in burials). Each of those items can help us to reflect on something about Jesus. David Ginn also sells a ball to sponge star (called "Star of the show"), which would fit well in a gospel show at Christmas time, as the Star of Bethlehem. - Donald P.S. Why not a mismade Christmas routine? Take 4 silks, draw a Santa Claus on one of them, Kris Kringle on another, St. Nicholas on another, and Frosty the Snowman on another. Talk about each character, what they represent to the secular world. Place them into a change bag, and begin talking about what Christmas is really all about. Then pull out a big silk of a representation of Jesus, showing that all those other things are nothing compared to Jesus. It's a rough idea on a routine, but we all should be capable of finessing things from just idea's.
