That was your fellow Canadian Eric Samuels pick. So good in fact that me and Mikael went back there the next night too 😀

On 2013-11-16 10:11, George Hunter wrote: George: I suggest you re-read your original post for the answers. You state, "Though I doubt that was their intention." You, yourself believe that malice was not the intent. So what was the intent? To quote Bob Cassidy, "It was all meant in fun." It was done to get a laugh. What is a roast? It's where people insult each other in a humorous manner. Mind you that many on the panel were "roasted", not just Bob and Jheff. Did you forget this? The panel read the minds of the audience, and sensed discomfort. That's what they do as they're mind readers. They asked how to turn this mind numbing experience back into a fun roast as there is a large audience staring at us. Well to do that they have to insult someone in a humorous way. Remember the definition of a roast? Who? Well Jheff seems to be the most appropriate target. Will walking out be funny? Yes, Let's do it. An eruption of laughs and applause ensues. The problem with your group theory is 2 fold. 1) you've already stated that there is no intent to cause malice. Why would any of the individuals not follow? 2) Of course a single individual would not have walked out alone as it would not have been funny. Fun was the intent remember? Not because of your group theory. You also state that a couple of other speakers were not at their best. That may have been, but no one was near Jheff's level. That's a fact. If you really care about Jheff's feelings you should end here as he and other panel member's may be reading this thread. I don't think he'd want this to go on ad-nauseum. Overall, the roast was very entertaining, and the walkout was 1 of the highlights. It will be remembered and recorded in history thanks to you George. Best to you, and the End. Ken |

Ken,
1. Jheff wasn't the target of the roast. 2. If you don't want this go on ad-nauseum why YOUR post? Just my two cents. J |

Did you enjoy Mindvnetion? Was it your first time or had you been there before? |

Hi Mindpro:
Thanks for inquiring. I did enjoy the convention. It was either my fourth, maybe my fifth. (At my age (75) they say your memory is the third thing to start failing on you; I cannot recall the first two!) I no longer learn quite as much at Mindventions, because by now I have learned more. And this time I did not spend as much $$ in the dealer room. Michael Weber was a wonderful surprise; I had not heard him before. And I enjoyed Cashetta so much I had my picture taken with her! (I may be the first theologian to be photographed with Cashetta. Its circulation could damage my reputation, . . . and hers!) George |

I really enjoyed meeting you George. I wish we had more time to talk but next year I'll be low profile and we should be able to have a decent conversation.

I also really enjoyed my first MindVention. One regret - I was hoping that after the conference I would be able to put more faces to the names on the Café. Unfortunately that didn't happen. I'm sure I met a lot of you - I just can't correlate the names. As for me - I was the one bringing Bob his drinks during the roast. (I did manage to correlate him). I intend to do better next year.

Wikipedia: A roast is an event, almost exclusively in the United States, in which an individual is subjected to a public presentation of comedic insults, praise, outlandish true and untrue stories, and heartwarming tributes as a mock counter to a toast. The implication being that the roastee is able to take the jokes in good humor and not as serious criticism or insult, and it is seen by some as a great honor to be roasted. The individual is surrounded by FRIENDS, FANS, and WELL-WISHERS, who CAN receive some of the SAME TREATMENT as well during the course of the evening. 2). I never said I would stop defending the panel. I was giving George reason to stop with the hypno group conspiracy theory that rendered the panel's testicularity helpless as he puts it. Me, I'll be posting until YOU like it. My three cents. Ken |

Roasts?
Have you ever heard of THE FRIARS CLUB? The FRIARS CLUB was *the* epicenter of many of the most outrageous roasts ever - bestowed on some of the most famous including Arnold Schwartzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Michael Douglas, Tony Curtis, etc etc. Have you ever actually attended one of these mostly private and unrecorded events George? Roasting has a long and proud tradition in the USA - they nearly always get quite dirty/naughty in terms of the verbal insults and often a little nasty - all in the name of poking fun. Many (most) top male celebs hsve all experienced this tradition. In a "roast" there are NO rules other than to keep the audienmces attention. Come to think of it this is a cardinal rule of entertainment in general.

Hi saysold
I could have sworn that you bailed out on this discussion, and here you are back again! For whatever it is worth, I have heard of the Friar's Club, but am more of a student of improv theater; roasts may or may not fit loosely within that genre. My only point in responding to Jumbo was in questioning Wikipedia as a sufficiently authoritative source to be citing in support of a point of view. To my knowledge, no serious college or university encourages its students to draw from (much less cite) Wikipedia in research papers. Most people in the academy regard it as notoriously (but not consistently) unreliable; almost anyone can write anything in a Wikipedia article, and it often takes awhile for someone else who knows enough and cares enough to correct the article. The articles can reflect all kinds of covert agendas; witness, for instance, the articles on political candidates during campaigns. I will not otherwise respond to Jumbo's remarks for now; I am content to wait until his characterization of what I said gets within, say, a couple of light-years of accuracy. Your statement that a roast has NO rules except maintaining audience attention will not bear close examination. Hypothetically, if the "honoree" was born out of wedlock, or has an earlier history of mental illness, that is no one else's business. (Surely you have noticed that speakers who crossed such a line may not be invited to speak at the next roast.) Furthermore, the laws regarding libel and slander do not exempt such speech if it is uttered at a "roast." George |

Earlier, I expressed appreciation for the recent Mindvention, and mentioned Weber and Cashetta. I should have added how much it meant to me to hear and visit with Thomas Heine and Ranier Meesfrom ParaLabs. Much of what they produce is marvelous, some of it innovative, and all of it is done with excellence. And they are gracious and engaging men. I hope they return to future Mindventions.

I enjoyed Thomas and Rainer too. I felt bad for Rainer on day 1 but I think he handled it well. Nobody put out a better pad.
