Once you start getting spam mail asking you to vote for their product, I'm afraid this "Official" trick of the year thread loses much of it's credibility and I'm sure, intention when it was first started.

I do not think that promoting your product in this contest was wrong at all
offering an incentive "if" it wins was full stop

I definitely agree that "buying" the votes wasnt the cleanest thing to do, but inferno definitely deserves it, its an amazing trick. Just not in my top 3.

The incentive offered would ONLY have been of value to those that (1) already owned Inferno and (2) liked it enough to be in the market for refills. It seems pretty likely to me that anyone meeting both these criteria already had Inferno among their top three effects of 2013 and if asked would have listed it there with or without any discount. Without some evidence to the contrary, no one should be claiming that Card-Shark "bought" any votes. As per the example Jamie has set, let's keep things positive. |

At the end of the day everyone's happy here. Jamie enjoys the attention. Christian enjoys the sales. Andy enjoys the sales. Café members enjoy the drama. The Café wins new members.

I must clarify
an email stating that the price on refills would be reduced IF inferno wins how bloody clear need it be? that was a misstep if you argue fair game...well I know your character Shawn

Are you cognitively impaired? Way to keep things positive! Quote:
this contest was neck and neck until precisely the moment that an email offering a reduced price on refills went out No, but you are leaving out a some important facts. Specifically, Theory 11 had been sending out daily email blasts to its substantial mailing list urging them to vote for the Code while Card-Shark had been doing nothing. Christian's email alerted his much smaller mailing list to the contest, and encouraged a vote for Inferno. See my previous post on this subject. Quote:

Thank you Jamie for keeping the spirit of this thread positive.
When I started Rostami Magic 5 years ago, I would have never thought that a magic app would be in the top ten list of the best trick of 2013! A big thank you to all of my customers that have voted for my products (teleFoto, Supa Thump and Cosmos Duo). Here are my votes: 1. iBalance by Mark Elsdon 2. Reflex by Patrick Kun 3. Ink'A'Change by Victor Sanz I must agree with many of the people that have commented on what an AMAZING year 2013 was for magic. Looking forward to an awesome 2014, G Ro |

This has been interesting to watch, and I appreciate the nobility between Jamie, Andy & T11. Just to throw it out there, both Inferno and The Code are great ideas. The Code, to me, is overwhelmingly more dynamic and powerful. You don't even need to use patter if you don't want to. Financial incentives aside, I believe The Code is an objectively stronger offering to the magic community. I think most would agree.
Looking forward to next year's updated process & outcome! |

Sorry to state what should be obvious, but when a few products are supported by campaigns, and the others refrain, this changes the game, and skews the results. It's now less about what people honestly experience to be the best product, and more about who mounts the best campaign and energizes the most people to jump on the bandwagon.
Then the winning campaign claims "best product?" George |
