Yesterday, word began spreading that Bob Knigge had passed away. Bob was a former member of I.B.M. Ring 58, a retired police officer, musician and magician. He Pearl Poodle routine was known by many. We were able to confirm that Bob died on Sunday, Dec. 22. Tom Vorjohan spoke with his wife, Annette, and forwarded this information:
Bob Knigge died suddenly on Sunday, December 22, at 1:45 AM. His wife of 37 years, Annette, was there snuggled up next to him as he passed. Earlier in the week, Bob had been falling for no reason; he was weak, but Annette knew that this falling was indicative of something more. When he fell on Thursday, she had to get the neighbor to help her get Bob back up. Afterwards, she discussed it with Bob and they called 911. Upon admission to the hospital, the doctors found his lungs filled with fluid -- he had double pneumonia. On top of it, his kidneys had begun to shut down. Annette said to me, "It's like God flipped a switch and said, 'You're done.'" Annette felt Bob was in good hands and had calmed down, so she left the hospital at 11:00 PM Thursday night; however, the hospital called her at 1 AM Friday morning and told her she needed to get back in there. She did. He calmed down as she laid next to him for the night. By Friday afternoon, Bob looked at Annette and said, "I love you," and he closed his eyes. That was the last words he said. Bob made it through Friday; Saturday some of his musician friends came to visit and were cutting up in the room. Even though Bob's eyes never opened again, Annette is confident that he was enjoying their visit and could hear them. Bob died later that night at 1:45 AM as Annette was snuggling up with him and telling him what a great life they had enjoyed together. She joked that she thinks Bob chose that moment to go so that he didn't have to put up with her snoring one more night! Many of us had seen Bob at this year's Unconventional Convention -- I was surprised to learn that Bob had driven himself to the convention! This February would have been the eighth anniversary since Bob's heart transplant (February 7, 2006). In fact, there is no funeral or memorial service planned as Bob had decided to donate his body to ETSU as a teaching cadaver...they were very excited to receive his body as they have never had a heart transplant recipient. Bob was 71 and had a significant impact on many, many magicians. Annette said that she would love to hear stories and memories from other magicians -- she feels this will really help her with her dealing with Bob's sudden absence. Her email is: annette.knigge@gmail.com She welcomes others to plan memorials in their own way to honor Bob. |

A genuinely great and nice guy. I didn't know Bob real well, but knew him for many years and always looked forward to seeing him at Unconventional and Winter Carnival. There is less magic in the world with his passing, but he left many friends and funny stories behind. He will be sorely missed.
RIP Bob and THANKS!!! |
