Oh I thought this might be some kind of new gaff. It's just a [ but different handling and routining I guess.

I have this effect and it is really good. Not only does he teach Imagination Coins, but he also teaches a few other routines, such as coins across and jump.
As pointed out earlier, this uses a commonly used gaff coin, not a new gaff. That means it is readily available in different denominations. I personally really like the quarter. I don't think it makes any difference what sort of setting it is, because this is really a "gather around close" sort of an effect and the fact that it uses regular every day quarters in IMO, is a BIG plus. I personally don't use anything but ordinary looking coins. I generally don't do coins on stage. I think that no matter how big, they just aren't big enough for stage. So, if coins are really more of a close up thing, why not use the most ordinary looking coins? I sometimes use half dollars, but I really prefer quarters these days. I have only performed this a few times as it is new to me, and while it hasn't happened YET with this routine (it has certainly happened with other routines), whenever magic happens in a spectator's hands, there is always the chance that something could go wrong. He spends quite a lot of time talking about audience management leading into the effect, but I think it would be good to hear a little bit about what to do if something goes wrong. What if they discover the gaff? After all, they are picking it up and handing it to you. I would be interested in other people's ideas on this. What do you say if they discover the gaff? I generally say "How did that get in there?" give people a little wink, and replace it with a regular coin. I then am ready with a follow up effect that doesn't use any gaffed coins. I think a perfect follow up to this would be Greg Wilson's coins across that uses regular un-gaffed quarters. Any other thoughts? KJ |

BTW, Dave Williamson also has some really good coins across type routines. One really good one is on his Penguin live lecture. He does use larger coins.

One more thought on this: A gaff of this sort costs around $30. This entire effect cost $40. That means that the add-on cost for the entire DVD instructions was only 10! This is some really good stuff for only ten bucks.

Inigmntoya, in an earlier post you dared us to open a link. Chrome caught it and stopped it. It is malware. I hope that you did not know that, as it would infect our PC's. Not everyone would have software that would block it.

Dduane... Not to worry... that is what that link is for, testing.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EICAR_test_file It doesn't infect anything. It only tests your ability to detect malicious problems. |

Magicians & Wizards,
Leave the man alone! MW2005 truly blew it & you gang up on him like a bunch of monkeys fighting for the last banana. Software? What has 'misdirection' come to you, fellow members? The subject relates to these 'melting coins', as it were, and the youtube demo demonstrates that the coin(s) with s***l or not is indistinguishable to the young lady handling the Magi's grouping of metal discs. Does this mean the product is top shelf? Not necessarily . . . the lady may not know the weight of such a number of small coinage (sell-point) & therefore be utterly amazed. Looks are deceiving in a world of people who, after all is said & done, want to be fooled, yes? The coins are too small with a plot that is frankly dull. Oh, MW2005, have a banana ;we all make mistakes & no-one was hurt, only enraged . . . boys will be boys. I love the Magic Café with the most amazing collection of wizards & buzzards! Now then, I wonder who's hoo and which is witch?

He musta stumbled on a thread that was dead for 3 months and had to add his 2 cents without being present at the time.
I have however bought and learned and even performed the effect and STILL haven't crashed my computer.

The part that really gets me is I have read posts and replies from everyone who took part in this conversation (while it was fresh and relevant ) and have never seen anything but helpful answers and pleasant replies. We do get an occasional bitter post from time to time but not from this particular set of members.
He just came out with both guns blazing and stood his ground no matter how many people explained it to him. Must have had a really bad day and once he was in it, there was no way out but keeping up the fight. I truly hope he got over it and realizes how much help and advice there really is on the forums here (he has been a member for almost 10 years ) I hold no ill feelings toward him. His computer goofed up and he vented (though wrongly, but I understand the frustration to the point when everyone else had no problem) Now, back to the effect. I really believe this is a true winner in my book. The gimmick and the cool little coin purse are fantastic. There is enough extra content on the new refilmed DVD to make it worth selling as a standalone with gimmicks included (which were not on his original video of the effect on Inside the mind or with the subsequent redub on the WGM DVD.). It is definitely a bold move and not for everyone but I like to push the bar from time to time and this has been working well for me. I have actually become better at audience management in all my effects because this one got me focusing on it so much that it carried over to my entire act. I explain things very articulately when I want a spec to participate and even (in a fun way) get them to repeat exactly what and how they will do their part. I guess it gave me a little nudge I needed. I have only once had someone turn over the gaff during the presentation (and they didn't even catch it). It was a magician friend of mines wife. She is tired of being his assistant but she will let me do effects for her that he doesn't do once in a while. She picked up the gaff, turned it upside down, made a funny face like "that don't look right" and placed it in my hand gaff side up. I went on without missing a beat and she asked her husband later "how did he do that trick?" "Do you have that one? It was pretty cool" -- point is, she saw but had no idea what she saw and it went over. Needless to say, I did a lot more practice before doing it again for anyone and really worked on my "directional patter" "do this like this then place this here like that... Thank you". Another point I would make (pretty sure I did somewhere before) I don't personally believe this is for beginners. I know gaffs make it really easy to say a beginner can pull this off but there is some intermediate SOH moves as well as the audience management portion is not something you learn from a chapter of a well produced DVD. You need experience with spectators before you can think about how to handle them. This effect is best done using someone you hand pick from a group. That takes some time at the school of hard knocks to classify the right person for the right effect. Everyone can work well for something. It's learning to determine who is best for what by studying them as you perform. It really is an art in itself. Anyway, thanks to Kozmo and Garrett for the wonderful effect and DVD. You guys ROCK.
