I remember being about 8 or so and seeing my uncle do card in the orange at my grandparents apartment and I was hooked. I am almost 50 so getting your hands on magic back then was no easy feat for an 8 year old. My uncle also had friends that worked in a magic shop in The Honeycomb in The Staten Island Mall so I spent my time between going to the Arcade and The magic shop. I joined the Magic Club in High School did my first stage show. Did Asrah, Dancing cane, Dancing hanky and a Shadow Box. I have lost more magic than I care to think about. I found some of my old books and realize how many I wish I still had. I still have a signed second printing first edition of Close Up Card Magic by Harry Lorayne that he singed for me at Katz's Deli after hanging out with him at Tannens in NYC, it got water damaged and I am devastated but at least I have it. A prized hard copy of Modern Coin Magic but I lost NYSINYD by Bill Tarr, Amateur Magicians Handbook, ugh the list goes on. I have about 3 or 4 card tricks that I do with my eyes closed but had pretty much been out of the game for years. I recently picked it back up with a zeal to learn again and now that I have more money and time, I hope I can do it justice.

I'm not so much concentrating on my Magical beginnings...as much as morbidly fascinated as to what keeps BRINGING ME BACK...maybe my collection of stuff. Maybe my need for an odd hobby. Reminiscing on non-factual greatness. "Oh, the days when..." Never were. But I guess, when the timing is right, I enjoy that look of...-you know that look a dog gives when he hears a distant whistle. Stunned, when you do the PHIL trick with the cards. That reaction is what keeps it going I guess. Stupidly simple stuff like PHIL. And things like The Vanishing Pencil at the cashier. Magic is attitude. And 95% acting. People believe what you tell them! Then....SHOW THEM! I dunno. I'll be 62 this year. 40 years ago, I'd be LIVING at Penguin. My closets would be full. Buying every effect under the sun. Today? Not so much. A piece of IT can be used (NOT FLOATING!) in many applications. A simple TT can do miracles! I don't do the standard CARD tricks. I do OTHER things with cards. But (expletive) it, what keeps DRAGGING me back here? What forced of gravity have we not discovered...? What hidden Black Hole are we being DRAWN towards? (~Shudder~!) (Expletive)! I'm-a go get my Sponge Bunnies... Doug |

I've always been into watching magic, but over the last couple of years my son started watching with me (particularly Fool Us). I bought a very cheap version of the colour-changing poker chips on a whim, did it for my son, and it blew his mind. His reaction was enough to make me start taking it more seriously.

Initially a magician did a performance at our school when I was about in 4th grade and it just blew my mind.
Once the bug bit then had to get this: Marshall Brodien's TV Magic Set https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndaAZ433fZE Over the years I dabbled a bit but for the past few years have been putting in much more study and practice. Kevin |

As a child my older brothers would entertain me with tricks that they either learned from their buddies or from Scarnes card magic book. An older sister of mine brought home a boyfriend from college and he did a story trick about a soldier at war. Later in life I found the war story trick in the Scarnes card magic book my brothers had. I still have the tattered book in my possession and there are definitely some real gems in there. What actually put me over the edge in magic came was when I went on a road trip with a friend and his parents, we stop at my 1st magic shop in downtown Minneapolis and the person behind the counter demonstrated the “Nickel and Dime” trick. Talk about being gobsmacked. The “Nickel and Dime” trick was my first magic purchase and unfortunately not my last. Lol !!! I’ve been dabbling in magic on and off for many years.

It was 1938. Stanley the MAGICIAN (The late Stamley Susan) presented his magic show at our local Jr. High School. Admission was FIVE CENTS! (The GREAT DEPRESSION) All 5 elementary schools in town, attended. (about 950 kids) Those red velvet curtains opened and Stanley entered in a tuxedo, carrying a colorful foulard. He said, "I heard it might rain this afternoon, so I brought along my umbrella!" With that, he showed the foulard, gave it a flourish, and A BEAUTIFUL O P E N UMBRELLA APPEARED ON THE FLOOR AT HIS FEET! For almost an hour, we were entertained with classic magic tricks, like Afghan Bands, passe passe bottles, a lota, egg bag, silks that appeared and changed color, ETC!
The curtain closed, all the other kids left. I found the stage door and was backstage! Stanley was packing his props. I said, "Hello! I'm going to learn to be a magician, too!" (I was about 8.) On October 24, 1945, I was not quite 14. I had found "The Magic Show Book" in the public library. I had the chutzpah, after a "show and tell" for my class, to book a show on that same stage, with my home made props! We charged 10 cents. (Depression was over!) In 40 minutes, I had made $24.00! The paper sent a photographer! A feature story appeared on the 'op-ed" page. Every lodge and club program chair person kept me busy through high school! My class mates were getting 50 cents an hour, mowing lawns (no power mowers in those days!) or sacking groceries. I was getting $10 to $20 for a 30 minute show! That was 79 years ago! It has been a wonder filled life! During my four years in the Navy ('51-'55) I connected with a "vest pocket agent". He kept me busy enough with my "cigar box full of props". I made enough money that I could send home to my bank, my Navy pay check, for 3 1/2 years. I got associated with various school assembly agencies, after college and, was never "at liberty" until I retired!

Like a few magicians I've heard of the 21-Card Trick was my gateway into magic when I was a child. My grandmother showed me almost 30 years ago when I was 12 and that was the spark.
I still perform the trick as a nod to my grandma but instead of the way she taught me I do the Bill Malone variation that has work from Marlo, Draun and Solomon.

This is a fun topic, a really fun one actually. I am on the autism spectrum. It's Asperger's, high functioning, but still suffer from some of the typical social interaction issues. As a child I was super shy and kept to myself, didn't have many friends, and had super specific interests like most aspies have. One day I was at a bookstore with my grandma when I was 8 years old and saw Mark Wilson's cyclopedia of magic. She bought it for me and I still have that book to this day. I read it cover to cover and attempted all that was inside of it. My first REAL trick was sponge balls. Today I prefer closeup intimate magic over anything else and specialize in card sleights. Long story short, magic allowed me to begin communicating with others through the patter, thus developing my general life skills. If it wasn't for magic, I wouldn't be who I am or where I am in life 20 years later.

I started with Magic because my 8 year old daughter watched Britains Got Talent 2 years ago and loved the magicians. Being a Dad I wanted to be the best Dad, so I learnt a bit of magic and just became "infected" to the extent I can't just sit and watch tv without a deck in my hands doing Sybil cuts or whatever.
Drylid, a friend of mine who works at an outdoor center and deals with inner city kids told me recently "We are all on the spectrum" and I thought about it and he is right! |

I forgot to mention, above, that, when I was in high school, I met Stanley Susan again, and, we became friends for life. Stanley died, in his 90s,
He had been doing shows in the '30s (Depression era) to pay his college tuition. He had begun as a teacher, and retired as a superintendent. (He had made about $25.00 on the show when I first saw him in '38. I had made $24.00, when I "followed" him, about 7 years later!!!
