I am wanting to do a routine that needs a (I'm pretty sure this name and everything is right!) Gene Anderson Newspaper Tear Gimmick. I would like to obtain one, but I am unsure which dealer items carry this. I do a search on the magic sites and I get bunches of different types of newspaper tears, so I am unsure which product contains the type that I am looking for.
From my limited knowledge on this subject, I am assuming that this is (or at least WAS) the "standard" gimmick used in the classic effect. If anybody could point in the way of this item it would be greatly appreciated! |

While this is a “gimmick” you make it yourself. Buy the book “Newspaper magic” by Gene Anderson and Frances Marshall. It includes the Newspaper Tear and usually runs for less than $15.00 USD. You can buy the Manuscript for the Newspaper Tear separately but for just a few pennies more you get so much more with the book.
The gimmick is not difficult to build (that is it takes no special tools or skill) and will cost you almost nothing. Frankly, all newspaper tear tricks are measured by the Anderson. It is the gold standard of newspaper torn and restored tricks.

Brian,
Harry is giving you very good advice. Buy the book. My old one finally got so worn that I was ashamed of it and replaced it. It's good stuff. What you will need for the gimmick is readily available from WalMart in the floral accessory section and about $2.00 will cover you for about 50 shows. I like the floral item because it is precut and means one less tool that is needed on the road. I never keep the gimmick. I just start over. The Gene Anderson tear is my favorite for a full size newspaper. When I worked fashion shows and hotels, I must have gone through a ton of Wall Street Journals doing the trick. I like to end it with the production of a dove, spring bills, or spring flowers for the restored paper. It is great cover. You can even show an ad, close the paper and produce the item fo real. This is especially true for bottled goods. Enjoy! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

Buy the book or video and all will make sense to you. Get the gimmick at your local hardware store. The gimmick is not the secret.
Can buy from Magic Inc., chicago, IL Bill |

Yeah hey guys, thanks a ton! I took you advice and ordered the book from Denny and Lee's. I am looking to perform Enquiring Minds from Loren Christopher Michaels. The book said that it comes with the gimmick premade? Oh well, it sounds like I can get one cheeply no matter where it comes from. Thanks again, the references really help.

Brian,
Please note that most newspaper effects cannot be "pre-made" as you should use a current newspaper (i.e. use the current paper from any town you are performing in.) Also you will not get the flash opening if you let the trick lie around for days, weeks, months. Not to mention that the paper will turn brown. You will not learn this trick overnite. Bill |

Since my posting this, I have started using wire sold for farm electrical fences. Use the lightest weight wire and it works easily with your hands. It can be cut with regular fingernail clippers.

I buy florist's wire, available from most craft stores like Michaels. It's in a multipack (20 pieces, I think), all cut to the right length.

P.S. Bob, why did you switch for the source of wire?

I use plumbers solder.
It works great and I use it over and over. Randi |

Thanks for the tip about florists wire. I have the Anderson booklet and it specifies "stovepipe wire", but in our hardware store it only comes in a large chunk, and it's not cheap. I purchased a different, cheaper kind of wire, but it's rather thin and I have to double it over itself two or three times to get the right strength.

18 or 20 gauge wire will work well. Anything smaller may be too flimsy to use as daffy mentioned.
You can get 100 foot spools of wire from any hardware or home improvement store for just a few dollars. Remember that the larger the gauge, the smaller the diameter of the wire. I.e 10 gauge is about twice as thick as 20 gauge, 18 gauge is thicker than 20 gauge.

A person can waste more money experimenting and failing rather than get the good tips on a thread like this. The floral wire and plumber's sodder are both ideas I think I will check into. As I said my Anderson's booklet specified stovepipe wire, but that was not affordable for me.

I've seen that video a few times. Bill sure does a great job on it!
I took the advice about getting plumbers soldering wire. I made a clip, and it works SO MUCH nicer! I was able to make three clips off of the roll I bought, and it was around eight or nine bucks. I'm not sure how many times I can use the clip before the wire breaks, but being soft as it is, it bends really nicely. I think I'll use the first clip for practice, then when I'm ready to present it before an audience, I'll use a brand new clip just to be safe. Wouldn't do to have the wire break during a performance! Posted: Jul 28, 2014 11:48 am I'm partial to Gene's original patter, probably because I can still visual Doug Henning speaking it in his magical voice. But I get a kick out of the built in "magician's logic": "So that you will recognize it when you see it again, I am going to page through the newspaper very slowly, and I ask that you remember a picture or add from somewhere within." (and after the flash restoration) "Now! Do you remember the pictures?" This tickles me, because the magician's logic behind it all is the implied "The pictures are the same, so therefore it MUST be the same newspaper! (After all, there is no such thing as a duplicate newspaper!) I always get a charge out of that. I think I'll stick to that patter.
