Hi Tony! First off, I want to thank you for helping me with my card manipulation act. I've really taken your teachings on body positioning and staging to heart.
One thing I'm still struggling with is having a consistent character. It might be because I have interests in areas of magic that are just not meant to be put together. In one routine I'm the manipulation man, making cards appears, and silks transform. Then I'm comedy man, telling jokes, and being a goofball. Then I'm serious man, doing a piece of mentalism and trying make it strike an emotional chord. I feel like each one of these pieces works very well individually, but when put them all together into a single act, I feel like I come across as very inconsisent. How do you suggest I try and reconcile this. Should I just give certain routines the axe and focus on one style? Is there away to make them all blend together more harmoniously. I guess I haven't truly found who my character is yet and I'm a trying to bring him more into focus, I'm just not sure how. |

The best thing for me to say is - YOU must motivate the magic.
Meaning, you must be yourself onstage or a character that you understand and know so well that it is strong and obvious. The character or the person you ARE should move the magic along. Though the effects may come with a label "Comedy" or "Classical Magic" etc. The person doing it has control over HOW it will be performed to the audience. Two magicians can be side by side doing the same "tricks" and if they understand who they are and the character is consistent, they will come off different to the audience. So find what you enjoy or I should say, who you enjoy being on stage and carry that feeling throughout the act. It is usually easier if the character is close to who you really are, unless of course you are an actor who can morph like Anthony Hopkins... Try it on for size. Don't be afraid to commit to one YOU! |
