"Dyslexic Queens" by J.C.Wagner has always been a favourite of mine. Great eye-candy. It was the first assembly I'd ever seen and since learning it have never, in my opinion, been able to find one that comes close. Although I agree with Cardguy concerning the wealth of material on J.Swaines' "21st Century Card Magic" I never thought much of "Shipwrecked".
"21st Century Assembly" and "Metamorphosis" are my personal favs, what do you think Cardguy? Also when performing "Metamorphosis" I lay down the cards on the box after they change. To change them back, I just turn the cardbox over for all to see. So when the Queens are taken out of the card box the first thing spectators do is check the box, thinking it's gimmicked. What do you think of this throw-off, Cardguy? To get back to the thread, Ed Marlo has a great ace assembly in "The Cardician" video which is hard to beat if you want something that looks simple and direct. I will trackdown the above mentioned assemblies with great anticipation.
So much to do. So little time.

I don't really consider Open Travelers an ace assembly in the strictest sense of the term. In an ace assembly, the cards vanish from one group and appear in another. In Open Travelers the cards are supposedly being moved from group to group by use of an invisible palm. The whole idea behind an ace assembly is that you never went near the last group, and yet the cards still appear there. In Open Travelers, the idea is that you are placing the cards in the second pile, even though the audience can't see them in your hand.
I use the MacDonald's Aces. I usually start with Twisting the Aces, and then go into my Twisting the Deck effect. I like the idea of having the aces and the deck in play already without doing any switching. I also like David Regal's Streamlined Assembly a lot, although I don't recommend doing it with the aces. Face cards work best for this effect (he uses Jacks). Lately I've been fooling around with Bro. John Hamman's Final Aces, which is pretty cool. I like Doc Eason's handling of this, which has some finesses by Scotty York. An ace assembly I do just for my own practice and enjoyment is Jack Merlin's from Expert Card Technique. Jim |

Logan,
I know you said you prefer "ordinary deck" assemblies, but you also said you were considering 'Aces In There Faces.' So if you aren't ruling out gimmicked cards then take a look at "Tension," at http://www.jbtv.co.uk/guide.html I haven't seen the princple it uses in any other assembly before but maybe someone else has? (I drove 120 miles round trip to buy this effect the other week and they were closed!) Gary Ouellet's "Three Second Wonder" is a great way to begin an ace assembly, does anybody else use this? Ian |

I haven't seen the princple it uses in any other assembly before but maybe someone else has? Do you mean the principle as in "method" or the idea of them moving gradually through he packets? The progressive ace assembly plot, as it is referred to, comes from the mind of Ken Krenzel. There have been a number of versions in print and marketed. A couple of the marketed ones are Bob King's excellent "Big Mac" and Aldo Colombini's "Fly Cards" using flys instead of aces This new version, "Ten-sion" boasts no sleights. I saw Mark do it last month, I forgot to ask why he was using tens Maybe it was simply so it could have a neat title. I certainly wouldn't drive 120 miles for it with our petrol prices lol. Yes I've used the Ouellet ace production which is really an old Al Smith idea. Sad Ouellet passed away the other week. Paul http://members.madasafish.com/~phmagic |

Paul,
Sorry, yes, I meant method! It just seemed so suited to this kind of effect that I was surprised I hadn't seen it before (not like I've seen them all.) Tens? Maybe these are they are the most obtainable gaffs. On the other hand, mark is partial to the odd corny pun 120 miles is nothing when you've just bought a car! "Small But Deadly" sounds interesting. When I was starting out in magic, all too much of my material consisted of packet tricks. I cringe and squirm as I recall my elementary mistakes. Where were you 20 years ago? Ian |

I love De Ja Vu Jokers, from Darwin Ortiz At The Card Table, even though it uses jokers. It is a very good assembly as well as a Disassembly.

Quote: I think it's called "twilight zone assembly" and I really like it too! Very baffling and pretty easy to do like a lot of bannons stuff. And it's non gaff which is also a plus.On 2002-06-04 03:22, Paul wrote:

Most people seem unaware that the Kohler routine was published in "The New Tops" by Ed Marlo.
I agree with Matt, Wesley James' "LSD Aces" is excellent. For a standard ace assembly, you can't beat Marlo's "Bluff Ace Assembly." "Solmar Aces" has been a longtime favorite as well, if you like the backfire finish. |
