Poker test.
Color Monte or Stand up Monte Emerson & West's "Flipped out" Have been using it for 35 years and just can't top it. I make up my own cards since it is no longer commercially available. |

Both Ken Brooke and Paul Daniels have said Mackenzie's Dink Trick is the best packet card trick.
One magician's wife saw me do it twice and said it was the best card trick she had ever seen. Handling is vital. It is a trick for people to look down on. What gets them is the appearance of the drink cards - the last five changes. Pace and rhythm are important. I would only ever do it with people standing around looking down at it. And I have no doubt that people suspect there are more than four cards but there are so many changes and a reasonably interesting story that they get swept along with the performance. And if, at the end, you cop the bottom five cards when you go looking for the wallet, just hand someone the four remaining cards, you will surprise them some more. It is based upon a trick of George Sands that was published in Hugard's Magic Monthly in 1946. Oddly enough, two of the tricks I listed, Marked, and the Drink Trick start off like Twisting the Aces, a trick I detest., even if it is on Pete's list. |

I see the common thread is Stand Up Monte.

Yes, Stand up Monte is solid. I actually got to
See Garrett Thomas do it in person last weekend at the Portland Magic Jam and He showed me a different ending that looked great but I wasn't able to learn The moves because there wasn't time. I have to remember to contact him about the new Ending moves:-) |

Stand-Up Monte is excellent.
The trouble is remembering it. I learnt it two years ago and if I didn't do it for a week, I'd have to go over it again a few times. If I didn't do it for a month, I'd have to go and watch the DVD. Garrett acknowledged this in a recent lecture I caught. If I sit down to learn it again, I will build in points, beats and specific patter lines that will tell me exactly where I am. There are some great packet card tricks out there. Some use an array of counts. Sometimes you have to replace a card on top instead of the bottom. My mentor, Eric Sharp gave me some advice, "As a professional, never learn a trick that if you don't do it for a month, you have to re-learn it." |

Took me ages to learn Stand Up Monte, didn't help with the amount of times that Garrett spins and flicks the cards around when teaching it. It is a great routine but man, sometimes when I performed it I'd get the fear that I'd turn over the wrong card and expose the gaffs/mess up the sequence.
That's why I like Corner of Piccadilly, easier to follow and once you learn it you've pretty much got it down for life. |

But for many, this move seems to be 'the invisible thread' of card work. In other words, people give it a go but often don't then have the confidence to use it in the Real World. As for the trick itself. Let's be honest - some spectators may believe that you are using more cards than originally shown. But rather than being just another packet trick, this version is 100% entertainment from start to finish - and THAT, to my way of thinking, is the most important point. And I have to agree with Quentin's point, in that Twisting The Aces can be an utter bore-fest for spectators - with Oliver Mackenzie's Drink Trick adding so much more value to the original concept.
