Hi all,
I recently purchased a MAK Tea Kettle and, as I'm reading the instructions, I'm trying to figure out which type of coloring is best to use. Any recommendations before I go out and purchase any? I've heard liquid, gel and powder... so, what's everyone's thoughts? Thanks very much, in advance! ...Stacy |

Stacy, I'm not sure if its better, but I use liquid. It is convenient and it works well for me!

Supreme Magic in England used to sell a trick and they included pieces of tissue paper that you were to wet and they would stain the water.
I'm not sure if this would work for this trick, but I thought the convenience of not carrying food coloring in your prop case might be a plus.

I use the liquid you can buy in any grocery store. They come in a small box that holds 5 colors in a concentrated form. About 2 drops is all you need.

Thanks very much Jef and Bob. Appreciate the information!
I've just written to Supreme Magic and will see what they say. As for the liquid, I'm curious if, when you do your preset, if that's when you would add it and let it dry? I guess it's the movement I need to work on so that the drops are not visible in the bottom of the cups. Thanks again for the advice! Stacy |

I don't know what you're producing in the end but I've used a ribbon of 9 " different colored silks sold by Bob Sanders here on the Café and it's about fifteen to twenty feet long as you have a kid help you with pulling them out. It works great with the teapot. Just a few cents of info.
What if the Hokey Pokey really IS what it's all about?
My neighbor rang my doorbell at 2:30 a.m. this morning, can you believe that, 2:30 a.m.!? Lucky for him I was still up playing my drums. |

A friend of mine who used to do the trick put a strip of 1/4 inch chrome pinstriping tape around the bottom and top edge of the glasses to decorate them. It covered the possibility of the audience seeing the dried color on the bottom. he also painted the bottom of the glasses so they wouldn't flash the color to kids sitting right in front of him.

I have used food coloring for years in my Atomic Cocktail shaker. I use a longer, taller glass so the liquid is more visible. My hand covers the bottom of the glass which also covers the dry ice. Yes, I do go to the trouble to get dry ice to make the glasses bubble and smoke. It is worth the effort.
I also use a different amount of drops on each color. Some take three and some take four. The tape idea is good but you can also find some older glasses that have little etching on them to hide the food coloring but really no one can see it if you hold the glass properly which also makes the colors more visible. These have all been such amazing suggestions! Thanks so much to each of you for your input... it's greatly appreciated!!! I'm intrigued by the dry ice effect as well... would love to see that!
