Does anyone here know the origins of or references for the force where a magician riffles through card faces after asking a spectator to spot a card? I vaguely recall seeing Brian Gillis use it. Also, I believe it was used in the opening sequence of Now You See Me. I've looked for "glimpse force," "sight force," "spot force," "riffle glimpse force," etc., all without success.

Thank you in advance,

Andrew

The first time I ran across this idea was in The Amateur Magicians Handbook by Henry Hay. It's under the heading, "Thought Forces" in the "Hand Magic with Cards" section.

Just what I was looking for. Thank you! The section is small, but covers much ground! Looking forward to getting into the rest of the book sometime soon.

Did the original version use the short card? I have also seen it with the top card being out-jogged.

As I recall, Hay described using breaks and steps. I'm not sure who described use of injogged, short, or ultimate cards.

Nate Leipzig was using that approach around the turn of last century. Have you checked the Scot book?

I think Al Baker used it with a short card.

This dates back to at least 1889. A version can be found in Professor Hoffmann's Tricks With Cards~A Complete Manual Of Card Conjuring.

See also Charles Reynold's marketed effect Force of Thought.
