I have looked at the threads on snake in basket and am wondering if the new version, if there is one, is more reliable. Furthermore, is there a cheaper version, because I only need the snake to move up and down from the basket?
Thanks, Martini Posted: Jun 7, 2014 03:52 pm Is Abbotts repeating snake in basket remote controlled? And reliable? |

Lemartini1050, you never reference what you are talking about. To my knowledge, there are no Snake in Baskets currently available. So I don't know what your are referring to, what new version. Electronics is expensive, no such thing as a cheap Snake in Basket. Term cheap is relative, what on considers cheap, another considers reasonable. It also has to do with the meaning, cheap in price or cheap in workmanship and parts.

Abbott's had two different types a mechanical (wind up) and a puppet. Abbott's did not make an electronic one to my knowledge. I do not know what they currently actually make if anything in this category. Parts are getting more hard to find these days.

Abbott's was never remote, remote was not available back in the 1940's. Watch your referenced demo video with our eyes open and not wishing what you hope it is, but what you actually see. Watch intensely. Actually, this is more of a positive working then any electronic and remote versions.
I suggest you call Greg Bordner with any further questions. He is the guy in the video and owner of Abbott's Magic. P.S. Did you see the "edit" button, no need to post each comment separately. |

No remote. An off-on switch is used (watch the video at about .53 and 1.23). The Abbott's Snake Basket I had was made in the 1950s (I got it used in the 60s) and worked reliably for a couple of hundred shows right up till I sold it in the 70s in favor of a multi-function (more than just showing a card) Jack Hughes like snake basket (which, by the way, had no motor at all). It was still working for the guy I sold it to the last time I saw it in the late 90s.
I suspect that the battery operated one is pretty much the same but with the clock-work run by an electric motor rather than a wind-up motor. I also suspect that the battery version is just as reliable as the wind-up version. The downside of the battery version is batteries die and you'll need to make sure that your batteries are fresh for every show. The Abbott's version I had was entirely mechanical (windup clockwork). All you did was flip the switch and a couple of seconds later the thing worked running through its cycle (up, pause, down and off). It was pretty basic. Just as you saw in the video. The battery version will keep cycling until you turn it off. You have to take the card from it's mouth for it to pick up a second card on the second cycle. Again it is pretty basic and does what it was designed for. For around the same price (maybe a bit more) Terry Lunceford makes a remote control type of snake basket. He calls it the Viper Pro III (you can still find version II for sale). It is different in that it features a spring snake jump out of a basket holding the card. It too is reliable. Video of the basic routine: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMjlP4EX2vw or http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Fp-kTRcfiI And totally off the wall and going in a different direction Dick Barry has a version that is a not really a snake in the basket but a snake going into a can to find a card. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6zXgO28Xz04

This may be of some interest.
How effective is the basic effect??? Well, when Karrell Fox was a late teen and/or early 20s, his whole club act was the Snake in the basket!

A basic non-electric "Viper type" easy design can be found in Tarbell.

I had a pro viper, great effect but not really well made considering the price. Anyone know if pro viper III is any better. I don't like the Abbots version, far too slow moving imo-

When I was first getting into magic, in Poughkeepsie NY, in the late 50's, Bill Arenholz (Foo Ling Yu) was retiring and was selling off his magic. My dad took me to his house and I bought a number of his props. He told me that a few days before, Dick Schamberg, another Poughkeepsie magician who ultimately moved to Florida, bought his snake basket and the Chinese mask that he wore, which was made by Dai Vernon's wife. I think that Bill told me that he made and marketed a version of his snake basket. I ultimately bought the Abbott's snake basket, but I sure wish I had been able to buy Mr. Foo's mask!

I guess I just like the old basic Abbott windup snake basket without out all the bells and whistles. I have seen too many guys do great acts with it.. Guys like Tommy Windsor, Karrell Fox, Tim Dermeer, Roy Kissel and others. One realizes when you watched these guys work it was the guy and all the bits of business put with it and not the prop that made it work.

Yes! Once again, IT'S THE PERFORMER AND PRESENTATION, NOT THE PROP!
I wonder if "them guys" are doing the Saint Patrick bit "up there" where the lots are always level and the grass is always green~!? (Kissell & Deremer would appreciate that` I seem to remember that 1when Karrell celebrated his 21at birthsy, Percy made a special snmke basket as a gift for Karrell. I think the sneaky snake was about six feet tall~

Dermeer is not trading lies with Kissell just yet though he has had some serious health issues. He is working the lots this summer.

For years I used the Terry Lunceford snake, it got fantastic reactions. I think this one with the jumping basket addition would play even better. Anyone have one of these ? I would be interested to hear what you think about it, quality of the build etc. The Lunceford one wasn't very sturdy.

Hi Richard!
Egad! I didn't mean that Tim had already made the 'big jump'!!! I just meant that they were the two of the four listed who would "appreciate" the "level lots and green grass" line! I'm heading for Colon tomorrow to work Rick's "convention". Wish I could be out there with Tim on the road.
