For the life of me, I don't know where to post this on the Café. So I'll start here. I'm working on a new commando act, since my ex stole my show in our separation, but that's a long sob story, and I'm sure you don't want to hear it, and I mentioned it briefly in another thread. Suffice it to say she has several years of my hard work, time and money in her possession, and I'll probably never see it again. So I'm starting over from scratch. I've checked out Jeff McBride's commando act, and it doesn't fit me or my style. I need to come up with my own.
I've been brainstorming on paper, coming up with possible ideas of effects that would fit, (I'm dreaming) but I'd like to hear ideas from others of what might be good in such an act. I'm open to suggestions while I compile my list, so I hope you guys will chime in. Â

Thanks Mary. Most of those on your list I already have on mine, except for the invisible deck, and I have a plethora of those in my repertoire, but I had not considered it for anything beyond a close up show, but on second thought it might play big in a platform or stage show. So I'll add it to my list of possibilities.
I posted another thread trying to get information on the linking rings, but so far no response.

Uday's 6" linking rings seem to be good quality and will serve in various size shows.
The single ring is also great for Ring and Rope, heavy and small enough to manage. -Mary Mowder |

Thanks Mary.
One of those effects you suggested I did not know about and will be adding it to my repertoire. |

Yes, some of them I already have under consideration, but there is a couple there to jog my imagination.

It might help if you stated the criteria for your commando act.
Not everyone knows what that means. I have a vague idea, having seen the McBride DVD, but the details would help. -Mary Mowder |

The Commando Act is a PRACTICAL stage show; Portable; Packs in a briefcase, when each effect is completed, goes in a "ditch bag" which hangs from the back of the briefcase. Â After show is done, the filled ditch bag goes in the briefcase, the case is closed, and you take your bows and walk off, ready for your next gig.Â
* Enter a bare stage (Only a chair or small table  provided), and Perform the most SPECTACULAR OR ENTERTAINING act possible out of costume pockets, or from a bag or container or BRIEFCASE  carried on with the performer.  * LEAVE THE STAGE AS BARE AS BEFORE with only expendables such as confetti & streamers left behind. As angle proof as possible. One man show, (except for volunteers you call from the audience. No livestock, no liquids. Should play from twenty to thirty minutes. Requires no stage, lighting or sound equipment, just the performer to run the show. The last requirement is the most difficult, if you can incorporate it. The show should be able to play before all types of audiences, children, adults, family, schools, libraries,  etc, by simply "adopting the patter or presentations to the audience.

Daffydoug,
There is life after divorce so take heart and get some satisfaction through your magic. I must recommend the simple but oh so effective and entertaining trick, using an invisible deck, called Cellular Telepathy (by Bill Abbott). I bought the manuscript years ago at the Café for less than a price of a pizza, and it truly packs small and plays big. I promise it will become one of your favorites should you make the plunge. Does Abbott carry it? Could you describe the effect?
I have several invisible deck routines, and currently my favorite is Jay Sankey's "X Deck". We aren't actually divorced yet, just separated. (By about 650 miles!) I am honestly not holding my breath on the possibility of my seeing that briefcase show again, but if I ever did, by a miracle, it would be a TREMENDOUS blessing to me and would ease my pain to an immeasurable degree.

Color changing silks (with or without the 1/2 dyed kicker) is a very small trick that can play big. One of my personal faves. Expense is fairly low, just the silks and the gimmick.
What did you do with your old briefcase show? How much of it could be replaced without too much work and expense? During the course of the divorce, perhaps you could ask that your show be returned? Not knowing the circumstances, I don't know if you could insist on it as part of the settlement. -Patrick |

She keeps stringing me along, and I sometimes feel like she's holding my magic show hostage.Â
The problem is further complicated by the fact that she lives on a mountain, and she tells me that the storage shed has been ransacked and trashed by humans, animals weather, and insects. She says she is not sure if anything is untouched, including her own belongings. I only have her word about it because she lives at least 650 or 700 miles away from me. My main show was in a thick aluminum briefcase however, so if it stayed locked, it may still have the contents on the inside in good condition. My children's birthday party, however, was in a regular briefcase, so it may not have survived. My Axtell bird puppets, and Daniel, my vent figure that you see in my avatar may not be in too good of a shape. Possibly completely ruined, along with my expensive classical guitar. I like to hope, but when I try, I see a very dark picture. I'm afraid to get my hopes up too high, because they may all come crashing down. As far as how much to replace everything, that is inestimable. I had so MANY not so cheap effects in that case. Some I purchased outright, and others I took time to research and seek and find the needed materials and construct them myself. My time investment alone is priceless. I'll tell you the truth. It hurts. It hurts really, really bad. But I need to bite the bullet and go on. And as I said, start all over again from square one. I'm thinking about trying to sell some of my close up effects here on the Café to raise money so I can put together the commando act. My ultimate BIG DREAM is to someday own Sean Bogunia's "Extreme Hank" and travel around amazing audiences everywhere.  But that would not be part of the commando act, because It doesn't fit the criteria, but I think I'd like that later down the line. I'm DREAMING ALL OVER AGAIN. What happened to me with my marriage has caused me to have to take a step back and RE-THINK everything. And I'm not going to let it stop me. My dream is bigger and better than ever. I woke up from my sleep the other day, and I had dreamed several dreams about Doug Henning. I was his friend, helping him with his magic act and just being his friend. I know he's gone, but the dream lingers and beckons me. I don't know what to make of it. Maybe it was strangely prophetic? Maybe it was some weird thing with fate or destiny. I only know I MUST put together a new act!!! A brand new show is calling me. I need to spread mystery and wonder throughout the world.

The effect Mary Mowder suggested was - "Word in a Million Book Test (Mark Mason)"
A great effect that fits my act perfectly. Thanks again, Mary! |

Apparently, I've been doing a "COMMANDO ACT" for most of my life, and didn't know it!!! I've never used a "ditch bag", so I don't need to "sort" out the props. MOST of the props are/were NO RESET. They are/were "GRAB AND DO" props,
On the road, I oftrn did four 45 minute shows per day (in different schools--often driving a hundred miles per day to do them.) I might have a primary school in the early AM, then a Senior High in the late AM. Then, after a quick lunch, a K-6 Elementary followed by a K-12. Sometimes in the evening, a Senior Citizen Nursing Home, a mental hospital, or a prison (hard time or juvenile reformatory) was on the itinerary. Handicapped (physical or mental schools were on the route, too. Now and then, I had a college, too. "It" all trouped in one 13" x 20" x 8" case. Occasionally, I schlepped in a DISECTO, or a STRAIT JACKET for a High School,or a College I'm "talking" about "COMMANDO ACT" (new term to me) in my book--in great detail. My CRITERIA are a bit more specific than what you describe in your post above, Doug, but, I've used them for YEARS, probably long before Jeff was a magician! (That's not a "put down" of Jeff, it's just a fact. I started performing for money in 1945, when I was 13.) McBride is a very talented magician. The first time I saw him work Abbott's Get Together about 15 years ago)his act was good, but, he didn't know how to "set" his makeup! That is the first thing that a "first o' May" clown learns! BTW...I particularly liked his Misers Dream. (I've been doing the MD since 1946. I've sold the routine to a few close friends for considerable money--one of them sends me a "royalty" check!.) He has done his "homework" on the MD, and, he sells it very well. One more "BTW" (!!) Thrift shops are one of the best "brick & mortar magic shops (if you have read TARBELL!!).
