I read a GREAT post by Mark Wade about originality in vent, he was encouraging people (particularly new vents) to not just choose the same type of puppet/act/jokes as everybody else and to take vent forward.
I remember thinking the vent mask was a really creative step forward, but 99% of the performances I've seen consist of getting a burly guy up, giving him a girl's voice and making him say 'I want to do my dancing'. There's no doubt about it, that is a funny bit but does everybody have to do it? Can't people come up with something original? The only variation I've seen is to use a second vent mask on a woman and give her a deep, gruff voice. Vents are a creative bunch, we really don't need to all be doing the same thing. Don't be lazy, let's be more creative and original for the sake of our acts, our audiences and vent in general. |

I'm all for originality and I guess that's why David Strassman appeals to me somewhat. I think the vent mask has been done to death actually and would like to see it used in a more interesting way. I bought one, but have not used it simply because it's everywhere. Although many people have asked me about it because they've seen "that English woman on YouTube use it" LOL.
Jeff Dunham is a good example of a vent who sticks to his own originality and he hasn't had to depend on cheap laughs with a vent mask to get to where he is. For me I write all my own material (unlike a certain Australian ventriloquist) and I don't wrestle with whether everyone will understand or appreciate it. I know I get the laughs and sometimes it's from different members of the audience at different times with different jokes or interactions, and that's okay because most of the time the audience is involved. |

My programs are based on my and my friends experiences.
It's easier to write and be comfortable that way. I use a flat vent mask, purchased many years ago from Steve _____.(not Axtell) I had it laminated and have used it on a person. Lately I've thought of using it to animate faces on posters. In the past I've used vent to talk with my brain, and now thinking about getting or having drawn a large brain. Don't know if I will go with a cartoonish or realistic look.

This morning I tried out a new routine in front of a church congregation.
Topic was health. Nigel, my main puppet, was joined by my Stomach, Hand and then my mouth. Each thought they were the most important part of the body. My mouth decided to close in protest during the debate. As I get older it seems as if I'm using less props including the number of puppets. Harris

I have some creative ideas (I think), but I can't get my substitutions to sound right enough to perform.
Reality is a real killjoy.
