Terrible news just conveyed to me by Mark Setteducati: Lubor Fiedler was found dead in his apartment. He was 81. A genius in our field has been lost.

I hate getting older. Sad indeed. But thankful for his contributions to Magic. I pray for his friends and family as they grieve and say goodbye to him. I hope they realize the impact he had and will continue to have on magic.
Thank you my friend. And Rest in Peace. |

Sad news for sure.
This is the first image that comes up in Google Images when you type in his name. Nice tribute picture here as well. |

That was taken at International Magic Convention and where he showed us his version of Card Surgery. This is the video I took: http://1drv.ms/1t1zUt4

Incredibly sad.
This must be how the world of physics felt when Albert Einstein died. He was my hero. Joe |

Not much more I can say but echo the feelings of loss and sadness expressed here. I am so glad I had an opportunity to see Lubor at Magic Live last year. His passion and excitement about a new creation or concept was infectous. The world of magic creation just got dimmer.... RIP Lubor.

Lubor took magic by the neck, shook it up, spilled it out and rebuilt it to make it better.
An architect has died. Farewell Lubor.
Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Fortunately we were able to obtain from Lubor all the material just a few weeks before he died in order to complete his book, so I can confirm that his legacy will be preserved and the book will come out in 2015. I wish he had lived to see it, but at least he very much enjoyed being on the cover of Genii.

We have to be very grateful that book will come out about his magic.
It seems there were a lot of obstacles in the way of it (such as his mental health issues which went on for about a decade). To finally get the material together just before he died shows how much of a close run thing this was. His death would be much harder to deal with if the greatest mind magic has had left without a proper record of his creations. Thanks for all your work, Richard. I think you have done more for the cause of magic than anybody else in the world. And speaking of the book - I would be curious to see if Lubor ever discussed the impact of his mental health issues on his creative process? Since his work has reached new heights since he came back to magic. |

This is very sad not only for his family and friends but for the entire magic community. What most people did not know perhaps is that Lubor regularly browsed through this forum and was actually a member, but never posted anything. I once sent him a personal message asking him a few questions regarding his magic tricks and career as engineer and a day later I received an extensive response telling me about his past and how much he loved reading what we thought of his magic.
R.I.P. Lubor. |

I am glad he knew how highly he was regarded in magic.
Since most geniuses are incredibly modest about their own achievements. I am not used to people just dying suddenly. Usually it seems there is a gradual decline over a few months. When I saw him 3 years ago - he was one of the most 'youthful' old people I have ever seen. Still - we have to be thankful that he ever became interested in the field of magic. I remember Max Maven writing that magic was lucky that Dai Vernon chose to revolutionize magic and not become famous in a different field. And I feel the same about Lubor Fiedler. I am so pleased his remarkable mind fell in love with magic and wasn't lost to the study of science. |
