I would like to print my own custom gaff card but I just tried and the quality was poor!
It probably is due to the card is not made to be printed on. ANy ideas? |

You need to rub off the shine from the card first, I use acetone. Then print using the normal setting on your printer not photo quality. Then when dry spray lightly with a clear varnish and leave to dry. I find that the acetone works better on some cards, normally the cheaper ones.

Any chance to buy cards without the shine on the blank face?
That would be awesome! |

I've never found any, but usually with cheap cards it comes off easy.

Cool, I have found a couple of websites which can print your design for you but they are expensive!

Alternate method - I've also lightly rubbed cards with very fine sandpaper effectively removing the coating. I then run the card through a color laser printer. Takes some experimenting.

A laser printer is definitely better than an inkjet if you have one.

Although I have never done it on cards, I would like to throw in the possibility of screen printing. Small kits are fairly inexpensive, and, high-quality prints can be achieved. Also, once set up, it is convenient to print many items on a run. For more than one color, things will need to be registered, but all in all, a fun, satisfying, afternoon project. I'm sure there are video tutorials that will help decide whether this method would be worth using for the specific project.

I've done a lot of art screen printing using water based inks. They will dry on cards, but any screen print also leave a thicker layer of ink, particularly on a slick surface. If you go with a solvent based ink you also have the problem of clean up.
You can try a heat transfer which I've been told can get good results, but the best way to go is the library.com system. It uses actual card stock which you print your design--worked up in illustrator or another postscript program--using a laser printer or copier. Then you coat the card with a commercial finish, cut them out with a special cutter, and round the corners with a rounding tool The last I checked, you can get into the system for about $300 depending on how many sheets of stock you buy with your original order. They also have standard design field available if you want to purchase them.

Use roughing fluid on the blsnk face on the card. The best way to line up the inkjet paper is to print a scanned playing card onto a blank a4 sheet, taking care that the paper feed mounts on the printer are tight, then use masking or scotch tape at the top and bottom, attach the blank card perfectly over the print out, re load the paper, and print the exact same card again.
works great! k |

If anyone else is looking to get some gaffs made up on genuine bikes (or whatever card you want really) then check out PrintByMagic.com
MagicAnt is a member on here and is producing gaffs for some big names (at least 3 of the new releases at Blackpool this past weekend). Good prices and great quality. Worth a look if you aren't getting the results you want another way.

About using a laser printer.
I tried using an inkjet with good results a few years back (removing the varnish first of course). I used the template from "versatile monte and beyond" by Mark Allen. Great results. Now I don´t have an inkjet anymore. I do however have a color laser printer, so reading cardmakers post made me very happy. My question is: can you use a printer that feeds the paper around 180 degrees during printing or do you have to have one that feeds the paper straight through? (I hope you understand what I mean). I have this model:http://images.samsung.com/is/image/samsung/se-color-laser-sl-c480w-sl-c480w-see-046-cassette-open-white?$PD_GALLERY_JPG$ Regards Mikael Johansson Sweden

Thanks for your reply Bernd!
I was wondering if I could print ond playing card stock when it rolls around 180 degrees so I will try now. Wish me luck! Mikael Johansson Sweden
