Downloads are fine, just back them up. A typical lifetime for a hard drive is about five or six years, cheaper hard drives will be less. The company you got it from will probably last longer, but plan for both to fail. Poor business decisions will cause the biggest and most successful company to fail, and time will catch up with all storage devices. A little planning and all will be fine - back it up.

But for now I will say:- In today’s world there is nothing as foolproof security with regards to any software (whether it is a video file/ a book in pdf or with hidden markings etc. etc.). It is only a matter of time to overcome/ eliminate any security feature built into the software. I had made this fact clear when Cosmos was to be released using the much talked about foolproof security feature of DRM. Today DRM stands nowhere. The security feature can be removed in a matter of minutes (or should I say in seconds). In the Cosmos thread (Secret Session) I had mentioned a very simple method of overcoming any kind of protection. I would say it is a false sense of security built into the minds of the creator and used only as a deterrent, NOT for the PIRATES, but for the simple, genuine & honest BUYER. This clearly amounts to threatening the Genuine BUYER so as to stop him from re-selling the legitimately purchased magic software in times of need. Sorry I am back to the same old never ending topic. One might, at the most, sell a couple of thousand copies of his magic, whereas there is millions of dollars at stake in the computer software, movie and music industry the world over. Who has the time & who cares about magic software! This is a FACT whether one like it or not! Let us not build spyware into our magic software. This needs serious thinking amongst our small community of magicians! Let’s be HONEST & reasonable to ourselves & to our community - And that is going to be the KEY to our success.

In the EU it's legal to resell a download:
"However, in Europe, the European Court of Justice ruled on July 3, 2012, that it is indeed permissible to resell software licenses even if the digital good has been downloaded directly from the Internet, and that the first-sale doctrine applied whenever software was originally sold to a customer for an unlimited amount of time, as such sale involves a transfer of ownership, thus prohibiting any software maker from preventing the resale of their software by any of their legitimate owners.[4][5][6] The court requires that the previous owner must no longer be able to use the licensed software after the resale, but finds that the practical difficulties in enforcing this clause should not be an obstacle to authorizing resale, as they are also present for software which can be installed from physical supports, where the first-sale doctrine is in force" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-sale_......l_copies |

I have to agree with Ustaad on this one. I also think it is a fact, that the product will be copied, no matter if it is a download, a dvd, an ebook or whatever. Taken that into account, the first decision need to be "release it or not release it". If the decision is made for "release it", I would appreciate to have it as convenient as possible for the honest purchaser of a product. In case of video, that would be an image-file of the DVD (e.g. .iso) I really like to download products as I have it immediately AND shipping cost is not an issue. On the other hand, I always hate it, that it is just one movie without the possibility to navigate to certain chapters. I can imagine, that offering a "standard" download AND an image file would satisfy a majority of potential customers as it gives everyone the possibility to burn a "real" dvd with all the benefits.
