This article is about the raccoon that was in my sons backyard! What the article doesn't say is that my daughter-in-law, my 3 grandkids and my wife were in the backyard when their dog Bella attacked and killed the raccoon. We are fortunate that the raccoon was taken care of BEFORE it came any closer to the kids!!! Now it's a "wait and see" time as Bella is quarantined for the next 40 days.....poor dog thinks she's being punished for doing something wrong when she was just protecting us!!! Fortunately like the article said Bella is up to date on her rabies vaccine!

The poor raccoon was not so fortunate.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

Tommy, it may not have happened if that animal didn't sneak into the yard, wearing a mask and challenging two full grown pit bulls.

Yikes. Have you already verified that the raccoon was rabid?

Absolutely. Fortunately, the dogs shots are up to date. Chances are very slim they will rabid dogs. Right now they are under "House Arrest" for 45 days.

I think the dogs should be allowed to run free in the neighborhood. Let's not stigmatize them with this "quarantine."

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

LOL Lobo. Glad to hear the dogs are in minimal risk and no one was hurt, Dennis. Is rabies common where you live? We don't see it very often.

Common, I think so. It is common in skunks, foxes, racoons, and definitely bats. We have lots of them in this area (NJ)
In the last month, I saw news where they found 3 rabid racoons in Atlantic County and Camden County. People getting rabies, now that is very rare.

I Just found this in google:
Although considered relatively rare in most parts of the country, rabies is on the rise in the Northeast. And in New Jersey, where the Health Department characterizes rabies as "a terrifying disease and a serious public health concern," a total of 2,453 cases have been reported from November 1989 to Aug. 20 1993. (4 Years) http://articles.philly.com/1993-08-27/ne......partment Also: http://www.state.nj.us/health/cd/documents/rabcases2012.pdf Which shows 6.6 thousand since 1989-2012 in NJ
