Hi all,
Went to a magic dealer in N.Y and wanted to shop an expanded shell for a half dollar. I was surprised: there was none. There were sets for the big one dollar coins, but not for halves. The dealer said to me that expanded shells are not that usual anymore. Instead, he thought that I should get a set of hopping halves. instead of an expanded shell, the shell is drilled out and then there is a coin a bit smaller fitting under. Do you use such a coin for effects with shells? is it possible? And , by the way, I'm quite new to coin magic. I would like to learn a good basic matrix-type routine using that shell... what are your faovorite routine? |

Are you sure the half dollar shell in your hopping half set isn't expanded? Have you tried to place it on coins other than the one that came with the set (gently so it doesn't get stuck)? Most (but not all) HH sets use an expanded shell.

Ok then....
IMHO, at best your dealer did you a disservice, pushing something he had in stock over the actual item you wanted that was not in stock. At worst, he outright lied w/respect to how common the use of expanded vs unexpanded shells are today. Quote:

I only have expanded shells, but it's certainly possible, and some routines that specifically call for the use of an expanded shell may work with a bit of adjustment. Michael Ammar's Shadow coins is a matrix type routine that could work with a little tweaking to get the cut down half that matches the shell in the right position so the cleanup move at the end places the shell over it. Alternatively, you could file down another half (or more) to fit the shell and do any routine so long as you don't need to borrow the coins (which _IS_ rare these days as most people don't carry half dollars on them). |

Very odd... Expanded half dollar shells ARE more common than unexpanded in most countries I have visited. And I haven't seen a Hopping Half set with an unexpanded half dollar shell other than custom made sets.

Well. I could sense being tricked . Not what I expected from a dealer on a highly respected magic shop in N.Y with a special reputation on coins.

Then That would be the same For Dollar's As well as Half's! So if They had a Lot Of Dollar Size Expanded Shells That shows You that they ARE The Usual Thing These Days!

I always used Johnson for the longest time until I decided to upgrade to both Lassen and Schoolcraft (Own both clad Kennedy set from Lassen and Deans Barber set from Schoolcraft). I would definitely go with either one for your shell choices, but I would recommend going with what Inigmntoya recommended and purchase the clad kennedy's. You'll see how precise the shells are, and in the future (unless you're perfectly happy with the clads), you can steo up to silver ones.
Current things to work on: Everything loops, Pinky count, Coins coins coins...

Kueppers sells both expanded and un-expanded versions of his hopping halves, and the un-expanded is about $20 less. Works and looks just as good, but you can't use the half sh*** on a regular half, so off-label uses are slightly limited.

My favourite unexpanded ] routines involve specially milled down, matching coins which fit inside the ]. It's called a Dean's Set.
I dunno who this magic dealer was, but he was not being honest with you. An expanded ] can be added to any innocent pile of change, and does not require 'special coins'. It is far more useful and very much more popular as a result. |

I would certainly prefer x-sh*lls, and yes, they are most common. With x-s, you (obviously) are using a regular half dollar inside. With HH, it probably doesn't matter, but I prefer expanded because they are more versatile. For example, you could do a coins across with the sh*ll and four regular half dollars. I got several rolls of half dollar coins from a Vegas Casino not too long ago. I purchased them for 50 cents each. Imagine that, a 50 cent piece for 50 cents.
