How are you making it this year? I'm in frozen Ohio but checking New Mexico and NOLA, my usual winter destinations, the high temps there are in the 30's and low 40's, which is too *** cold to work the streets. The whole country seems to be frozen out this year.

Now, if you were a tough old carnie, you would stick a hot water bottle in your pants, and hit the street!
If you get to NOLA, look up Jon Racherbaumer. O

Looks like it's supposed to be in the 70s this weekend in NOLA. Good luck, sir.

It was 10 deg. F, this AM, in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. (That's a three hot water bottle day!!)

Jason! Have you met Colonel Jeff Sobel? He's at the Air Base. Introduce yourself! He was the teen Eagle Scout magician at the 1985 National Jamboree of the B.S.A. I "recruited" him for the "job" when I worked a "trade show" for Boy's Life Magazine.

I have met Colonel Sobel. He attends the magic club in Pensacola, when he can. The last time I saw him was in September, though.

Hey Paddy,
we're sitting in the middle of Germany, in the moment. Paderborn. We're 'hoping' for 40's and 50's F,...'till January,... in other words,.. a Miracle. Still the fingers are crossed, the oven is burning strong,..... it's 38*F outside tonight, cloudy,.. light easterly wind. ,..we WERE in need of a few days off..... A few nice things about the chillier temperatures,.. less competition(!), Groggs, and Baked Apples(!). optimistically, "3-Grogg-Gallagher" |

Hey 3-Grogg-Gallagher,
It is going down to 16 degrees here in South Central PA tonight. How many Groggs would you say that is? |

G-man,.... NOW we know what the 'G' stands for(!).
16*,... uhh!,... Experience speaks here,... "One tall Grogg,. without the hot water." ,send the hot water up to Michigan, sounds like Dick Oslund could use it! Maybe this 'Global Warming' isn't such a bad thing after all.... still out there, with crossed fingers, Gallagher |

Well, OK, but it would be nice if you add a bit of scotch to it!

In South Jersey/ Philly area it's gotten quite cold as of late! Not so cold that I can't handle it, but my audiences on the other hand.... I find work at festivals and Christmas Village bits, but busking around here seems tough. I'd travel but that's just not in the cards this winter :/ It's all private gigs this season, really. Anyone else in this area? How do you handle this time of year in terms of busking?

Good thing too, since it looks like it's going to be very cold in the north east again. There's another thread going on about cold weather. To me the bottom line is, as Yehoshua said, the audience can't stand it. In my particular case is the balloons can't stand it either.

The past few days here in New Orleans have actually been sort of warm and damp. Tonight it chilled off again.
I've had to stand in the freezing fog here plenty of times, well into the night, just to make enough to go home satisfied. Funny, the cold here seems worse than further north sometimes, just because of the humidity. It gets right down into your bones. Makes my hands hurt, but bills are bills, and must be paid.
'Tis an ill wind that blows no minds.

So when you travel, such as going to Florida for the winter, where do you stay? First year full-time as well, and this winter is crippling me. I dropped my day job in May 2014, realizing I could make on the street in a day what took me a week at my "job", and despite it being the street, I was even treated better than I was by my "bosses", lol! That being said, Summer's income carried me through January, but Feb through April is proving quite challenging. Aside from the parties and restaurant work (which is tough to find out this way...all corporate "we don't do that"s) Street work simply isn't an option.
I was chatting with Eric Jones about it, and he recommended taking a "SuperShuttle" to Miami. I've yet to figure out the lodging bit, though. So yeah...thoughts? |
