In the U.S., the most commonly used coins for copper and silver routines (and for copper/silver gaffs) are half dollars and English pennies. Other options are of course available, but this particular pairing seems to be pretty much the default standard.
But what if one wishes to use larger, dollar-sized coins? U.S. silver dollars are obviously readily available, but I'm curious to know what the most commonly used dollar-sized copper coin might be? Obviously there are probably many options available, but is there one in particular that is most commonly used for this purpose, or which has become more or less the default standard?

British Crowns are silver. Karnak has asked for the most popular dollar size COPPER coin.

You are correct that most legal tender British crowns are silver, but I think Schaff was referring to copper Fantasy Crowns. Here are some examples from Todd Lassen:
Along with being beautiful, they have the potential for some very interesting story-telling. Quite a few were minted in the 70's, but Todd is now minting them himself to fit perfectly with his other coins. |

My apologies Schaffer if those are what you meant. Those coins look really nice

The ones Lassen uses are nice. I've also seen some similar one on sets I got from Jamie Schoolcraft. Frankly I've had a hard time finding copper dollar size coins. I've been to a few coin shops, looked on ebay, etc but haven't had much luck. I did recently pick up a few of these St. Gauden copper coins from The Magic Warehouse - http://themagicwarehouse.com/cgi-bin/findit.pl?x_item=TA9212&keyword=GAUDEN. They are a hair larger than a Morgan dollar, but are fine for spellbound or similar routines. Not sure if they could be made into gaffs though.

I would think you could gaff them.
Being they are pure copper. Todd |

I've been seeing many copper bullion coins in dollar size at local coin shops. They feature either Morgan dollar or walking liberty. They are quite nice and usually about $3.00.

The copper dollar-size coins currently used, such as those pictured above, do not tarnish like copper half-dollar-size English pennies. I don't know why. The tarnishing is un-even and makes the coins look fake, at least to me. I have a few of them and am not happy with them.

To tarnish copper coine I just chuck them into water for a day or so. My lassen copper coins seem fairly evenly tarnished tho.

I like the dollar size Chinese coins too, but they aren't as heavy and the hole can be a problem for certain routines. Anyway, thanks for the tip!! Love these coins. Ken |

I'm surprised no one has made a Sudbury Penny C/S. I use it all the time in a Spellbound sequence.

I have a Sudbury penny/Morgan dollar coin. I bought it from Schoolcraft about 10 years ago. It was a limited run. It also came with a regular Sudbury and a Sudbury shell to fit over the c/s. It's actually a sun and moon set.
