Okay, so it took me over a year to join this in fear of getting verbally assaulted by the elite for posting in the wrong places and saying the wrong things.
So please be easy on me. I was curious, and have not read or found anything to read on the benefits vs draw back of wearing rings while doing coin magic. Anyone with lots of experiance have opinions either way? I feel that the clink I get isn't good, and rings can get in the way sometimes, but I have big windows, super long skinny fingers, so having silver on my hands I feel like maybe gives me more margin for error. LIke a little flash may just be dismissed as a flash from the ring.... Is it worth me sudying with the rings on, or is it there like a unwritten law that coin work without rings is better???? Any rule of thumb? |

I don't think there is a rule of thumb for rings. I know several magicians that perform with their rings on, I take my wedding band off when I do coin work because of the risk of and unplanned clink.
Regarding windows, you are better off figuring out how to close them, than to try and disguise them. Hudson |

I have wore finger rings for years, and never had any type of click problem while working with coins. Just what move do you do that a ring would interfere with. The only thing I can think of is the clink pass.
I has a friend with large gaps between his bony fingers. He just worked and check his hand positioning in the mirror. You should work on the angle of the hand so the objects do not show from the spectator's position. |

Finger palm is main concern for clinking at least with what I know so far. When I pinch between two also.
"Rule of thumb"..hehe. I do have my mirror set up and have been practicing daily to get angles right, just was curious if it was like an "oh well for people with big windows just wear rings" type no brainer thing that everyone in magic community knew about, or if it was just a prefference thing. I'll keep working on those angles. Maybe try a little more with the rings to see if I can get comfertable with them without clinking. |

Cody...Your 'screen name' intrigues me. Are you from 'out west'?
Years ago, when I worked a lot of hospitality suites in Chicago, I did some close up coin work, but, that's a long time ago. I can't remember your question re: rings ever coming up. Note: >>>>>>>>>>>> The only "dumb" question, is the one you didn't ask!<<<<<<<<<<<<< I'm retired from almost 70 years of performing. (about 20, part time pro., and almost 50, full time pro. I joined "this show" (magicafe)in December of '12, and I haven't met any "elites" yet!!! I've seen a few posts that made me wonder what the guy's problem is/was, but, it was their attitude that made me wonder. Usually, they "disappear" quickly. This forum is titled" Rings...etc." "Rings" in this forum really refers to trick(s) with linking rings, Jardine Ellis Rings, finger rings--as in ring on stick or string. I don't remember the #$%% forum that deals with coins, --It's "close" to "here". I'll check it out and "report back".

Yes finger palm is the issue for me. I do a continuous production with silver dollars and the coins clink when there would be no sound, so I just remove my ring. Other than that, I do not have an issue with my ring.

Welcome to the Café, Coyote
Simply, most people when doing coin magic probably do not wear rings (as 55 mentions here), mostly in fear of an unwanted clink of the coins during an effect, a real possibility that could sour things a bit. That said, there are lots of our folks that wear rings when they do coin tricks, a real good one is Eric Jones. He wears coins on a few of his fingers I remember, and it's not a problem for him and he does a lot of tricky stuff. I wear my wedding band all the time and simply move it over to my pinky when doing magic, so that there is no clink and that I better keep up with it, and remember to put it back when the magic is done. I have found that this is a "To each his own" sorta thing, it works for some and not for most others. I would think it's in the individual touch. The more you practice with the coins while wearing your ring(s), the more you sorta figure out how to avoid the clinks. And yes, there are those that utilize the ring for the "clink" aspect when doing coin magic (i.e. some Click Passes), so all of this has been explored but there's no such "rule of thumb" to any of it, except that perhaps it's just better to not wear the ring(s) to more absolutely not have the clinks…Other than that, just do YOU. As to your "windows," try staggering your fingers a bit with the coin in FP, to better close and or mask the gaps. Again, Welcome to the Café… *Oh, "have no fear" and please do get over to the Coin Forum if you like, this would've been an appropriate question over there IMHO…I think even our "elites" would think so. -Mb

Hey there Cody!
Everyone here has given great insight and advice so far! I would imagine transferring from classic to finger palm or even fingertip rest would indeed be the biggest problem. In addition, I would offer the opposite proposition, as this has actually proven useful to me... Rings can also serve as an advantage to your coin magic; even with your windows Consider a retention vanish for example. The audio of the coin clinking against the ring is a great convincer, letting them know the coin did actually enter the hand. Additionally, your windows offer that much more visual cue to convince the crowd that they are really seeing what you suggest they are seeing. Couple that with the sound, and you have an ironclad winner. As long as you are technically proficient, use these things to your advantage, and your magic will just be that much stronger. This was actually a great question, and it's great that you brought it up. Thanks for sharing this with us!

There's also a visual element to consider.
As a spectator, I would find the simple contrast of metal coin and fingers to be clearer and more impactful than metal coin, metal ring(s), and fingers. |

This is true Cheese, but at the same time (similar to the sound the spectator hears as a convincer), I've found that the flash from the ring also can be used as a convincer. Especially if you have a silver ring and silver coins. The spectator melds the two together to create the illusion. Is it 100%? Of course not. But I've had good luck with it in the past. Now, I'm not saying to rely on these points to make your routine work...not by any means. Simply stated, just be aware of their implications as you go through practice and rehearsals. Try it both ways, and see what you prefer, or what you think works best given the circumstance.

I take my wedding ring off when doing coin work.
For several reasons. It avoids the "clink" at unwanted times. Silver is harder than gold and large, dollar sized silver coins especially mark my wedding ring. (although it does get marked in day to day life anyway) Also, I do some ring manipulations with a large silver ring...transformations etc. and some of Garret Thomas's Ring Thing moves...the wedding ring accentuates some of the discrepancies in that... |

I think if you practice with a ring long enough you'll get used to it and won't run into trouble. Just don't overdo it with tons of rings on your fingers; people will just burn your hands the whole time and be distracted-not misdirected.

I'm torn on the issue of with or without ring. My CSB routine is better with a ring because I use the intentional "clinking" of one coin/ring in a closed fist as a convincer as two coins.
The spectators are absolutely sure they think where all the coins are, then the transposition happens. Always gets them. Has anyone thought of wearing those "silicone" rings? You can have your wedding ring on and no clinking! If I'm doing strolling magic in a bar, I want a wedding ring ON! Here is a link of some... https://saferingz.3dcartstores.com/?view_full_site=1
