This Saturday I'm performing a 10-15 minute set at a magic show. The show is set as a parlour/stage setup. There is a small stage, and the audience will be about 50 people. I already have a few ideas, but I was wondering if any of you know any card effects that play well for bigger audiences and don't require jumbo cards? Effects that use audience participation are prefered. My ideas so far are:
Card to Wallet Tossed Out Deck (mentalism, Hoy) Departure (James Swain) Card at Number Impossible (Larry Jennings) Torn & Restored Any other ideas for high impact card effects for large audiences?

50 people is a very small audience. It is virtually a close up show. I should search your close up repertoire.
I did a card act for years all over the world. Only card tricks for quite big audiences. It is a marvellous thing to go on stage with just a deck of cards. There are quite a few card tricks for stage situations. Unfortunately, it is pointless to tell you what they are since your show is on Saturday. You will never learn them in time. You had better do what you know rather than make a hash of new stuff. Improve what you have. That is all I can say. There just isn't time. Saturday is less than a week away. |

I have tons of card material, some classic and some new. I am just trying to figure out which effects can be adapted for stage.

The Homing Card
Six Card Repeat Card Stab Gambler Vs Magician, have a spectator stood on either side holding a plate for the cards to go onto (Nate Leipzig did it this way) Various mental card routines. Swain's "Tribute to Dunninger" is more a stand up piece. As Alexander said, Saturday is not far off, a bit late to be working on a lot of new material. Paul. |

This is one place where the slop shuffle will triumph (no pun intended) over fancy riffle shuffles. The "tipsy trick" in the Royal Road to Card Magic can easily be done for large audiences..
It's crazy to start practicing now. You better get something easy. Try the Long Card trick or the Insurance Policy. Get them from a magic shop. The Royal Road has a section on platform tricks. The Nate Leipsig book by Ganson has Leipzig's act. The Faucett Ross book also by Ganson is a very good source for stage card tricks, including a complete act. I am normally very generous with information and am tempted to tell you what I did in my card act. Very easy stuff, too except for one item. I am going to resist the temptation, though. I don't want the act butchered. If you have less than a week to learn new stuff you are asking for trouble unless you are a VERY experienced worker. And even then it is a dubious thing. |

To Card Guy,
Please, please, take the advice of all of the folks who are telling you that it's not the time to start working on something new. I've done a lot of Card Magic on Stage and my top four choices are Giant Three Card Monte, Split Deck in Jumbo Size, The Zens 3 card transposition using Giant Cards and Envelopes (a great version is in the Fine Art of Magic by George Kaplan), and the Six Card Repeat. If you already do any of these, they are excellent choices. But, for Saturday's show, take a good look at tricks that you've done a lot and think about which ones can be seen by 50 people. That's not a large audience as stage shows go, but obviously lay down tricks where they have to be able to see cards on a table are going to be out. Even with Jumbo Cards, keep them in your hands as much as possible. An Easel can help a lot. Or, just having some drinking glasses on a table so that you can lean cards against them standing up will make some tabletop effects usable for a group of this size.

If you know Waving the Aces, I think that is a good choice. Also a good torn and restored card if you have one.
It is also helpful to use a jumbo index deck. |

I think Dennis is pretty much on the ball here.

51 Cards to Pocket (David Williamson version) plays very well on stage as does 6 Card Repeat.

Las Vegas Leaper should play very well. Maybe even Rising Cards or Card Warp? Tossed Out Deck is an excellent choice. You could (but you probably shouldn`t) do a routine where the spectator selects a card and places it in her pocket without taking a look at it. She then freely selects any name and phone number in the telephone directory. The random stranger on the other end of the phone reveals the chosen card. I once did this for an audience of about 100 people and it played very well.
If you know Gregory Wilson`s "411" trick, you know what I`m talking about. I forced the card using a method that allowed the spectator to open up a brand new deck of cards, shuffle it and select any card by cutting the deck. However, any convincing force will do. I agree with most of the guys here. Use the little time you have left to improve what you already have. |

I think that it was Andy Gladwin who had a trick posted on allmagic.com a while ago where the magician had a prediction of a card in an envelope in full view on the stage. He then goes to a spectator and has them pick "any" card. That spectator then has someone else pick any card and so on until 5 cards have been selected. Those 5 people then come on stage and another spectator eliminates them until one remains. When the prediction if opened, it matches that card. PM me if you would like more information.

Larry Becker´s OUT OF BODY is extremely strong and good for a big audience.
Its mental card effect thats very easy to follow. Looks like real magic. I have performed this effect for up to 250 people. Promise, this was a minor "hit". Pretty, easy to do. |

Thanks for all your suggestions and concerns. There is no way I'm going to perform a new effect. I just wanted to see if I already have some of the stuff you suggested in my repertiore. I have been performing close-up/strolling for a year now and am quite experienced and comfortable. I just never did a stage act and wasn't sure if certain effects were better than others.
I just remembered that I know the Zen Cards And Envelope trick. That is a killer cards across, and I just finished rehersing it. Other than that I was thinking of doing a comedy type Card to Wallet that I've been doing for a while. I also came up with an interesting triumph/mentalism routine a while back and was thinking about using it. Here is the effect as I would perform it: Spectator comes to stage and is asked to take out a $1 bill, fold it, and place it in an envelope that is signed by her. It is left in full view the entire time. I take out a deck of cards and explain how the deck is like a psychic reader and is going to help me in a little experiment. I shuffle the deck in a manner that mixes them face-up and face-down, and openly display them in an erratic order. After a magical wave, the cards are seen to straighten themselves out, and they are all face down again...except for four cards, which are still face up. Very mysterious. Is the deck trying to tell us something? I strip them out and tell the spectator to open the envelope that contains her bill and take it out. I tell her to read out loud the last four digits of it's serial number, and they are shown to match the cards that stayed face up in the deck! I don't know if this routine already exists. I personally have never seen a triumph/mentalism effect in this nature. I think it is a fun idea, and will play well. But anyway, thanx again guys for your suggestions.

6 card repeat works on stage as does a rising card effect. Various memorized deck effects work well on stage such as the routines by Bob Cassidy or Jaz Jakutsch. Card Sword, Card in Balloon (or comedy card in balloon), card on forehead, and Jumbo McCombical Deck all come to mind for stage use.

"Premonition" by Eddie Joseph
No force of any kind. No stooges, no sleights. Nothing to go wrong. 1 or 2 person routine... ANYONE names ANY card. When they look through the deck they find their card is missing. When they count the deck, there are only 51 cards. The card they named is the ONLY card missing in the deck. You can now produce this from your pocket or as I do from wallet. |
