Most of it is sh.te I have been 15 years on the trot and it's normally 100 % hype and pretty pi.s poor regarding new releases . You only have to look at the resale a week or 2 later . Great convention but most new stuff is garbage IMHO massively flatters to deceive unless you are new to magic then it's like a kid in a candy store .

I guess everyone has their view, and I'm certainly a newbie compared to your fifteen years, but I bought plenty of effects the past few years that I found to be well worth the money. I think too many magicians think sticking to the tried and true is the way to go, but it's really why the art has stagnated. I go to the Castle often, sometimes weekly and sometimes every few weeks, and it's ALWAYS a bunch of magicians all performing their variations of the same old boring effects. Every once in a while, someone is so good at one of those effects it transcends the repetition, but most times its snooze worthy and they'd be better served by doing something new or different. Even my wife who is awed by things thinks it's always the same. I think a lot of talented magicians get caught up in their own abilities and lose sight of what's astounfding to a layman. Jm2cents.

What you are misising in your above post is yes the tried and tested effects may be stagnated to magicians at a magic club but we are not trying to fool magicians but trying to floor lay people so that is why the tried and tested are better IMO . My wife your wife would also come into the bracket of a NON layman too as seen 100 , s of the same old tricks so wives girlfriends are not good examples here . Also if you look into the new releases most are re workings of old classics anyway there is not a lot truly new in magic .

I understand your point, but still think a lot of magicians fool themselves into thinking their acts go over better than they do. I take a ton of laypeople with me who never or rarely see magic and they often comment after that it was great fun but there was a lot of repetition which lessens the awe for them. If every show has card to impossible location it isn't mind blowing after the first one or they'll orrform overly complex and underwhelming card magic. Most people don't have the ability to see how others see them, especially it seems magicians who are often a little taken with themselves.
And I'm sure there are very few actual new ideas coming out, but they're new to most who aren't historians and often they're better handlings of older tricks. Maybe if I was a sleight of hand master I'd agree with you but since I am not, many of the updated handlings place effects into the realm of possibilities for me. I can see how very good established magicians would find these new releases beneath them but for the majority us, they add immensely to our limited repertoires. Example, I just bought lubors lens which is at once incredibly silly, simple and stunning. Anyways, I see your Ooint and understand. I think my abilities are much less and therefore I'm more satisfied with current releases. |

I am not knocking you good luck to you but I spent years buying everything but then after learning some basic sleights well my whole life as a magician changed for the better . If you love it enough I bet you with practice will get that Eureka moment one day . I always check what my fellow magicians are doing on the night not to clash but contrary to that everyone will have their own unique style on a trick and you will be surprised how few people have seen close up magic live right in front of their eyes before . All the best in your magic 😃
