I've been reading bizarre stories about this magician.... and I'm coming to an unfortunate conclusion ...
I think Saint was a con man... Charles David Meyers, Professor Sesrad, Sir Edwars St. Raw-Diem, and eventually Dr. Edward Saint..... I don't believe he was a Dr.

The word "Doctor" seems to have been liberally used back in those days to create a more dignified character. I wonder if Dr. A. M. Wilson of The Sphinx really went to medical school. Saint did much to promote Houdini's name in the 1930s and 40s, and in that respect, he did pretty good.
Thurston was a bit of a con artist as well in his early days, selling fake jewelry as the real thing. |

I also heard that Houdini's father really just bought a document in Hungary to be a rabbi. He may have received the idea from the rabbi he replaced in Appleton who did the same thing.

Houdini's father was an attorney by profession and had to flee Hungary because of a duel. David Saltman's website Houdini File details this:
http://www.houdinifile.com/2013/09/shado......her.html http://www.houdinifile.com/2012/05/who-w......hts.html You can see that Mr. Weiss's business card lists a number of skills. Understandably, given the language barrier, it would have been impossible for him to practice law here in the States. |

I love that site but I can find little there about Dr. Edward Saint.
Charles David Meyers ... I can understand a stage name. I use one myself ... But I don't use it in real life ... I use my birth name. These two names are miles apart.

It was a trend back in the days of the "Natural Magic" and until the beginning of the XX century to give oneself the title of Dr. of, for example, Natural Philosophy. You have plenty of examples like Comus (Nicholas Ledru, 1731-1807) or Hofzinser (1806- 1875). The one presented himself as a electrical healer and the other just borrow a title, which he never became, for the sake of a better public image. The magicians after XVI were dealing with a very hard to demonstrate "knowledge", so they needed to call themselves (i don't even know if "themselves" it is a word in english, but hopefully you understand me!) Dr. and Prof. in Disciplines which only they mastered, if I may say so.
Con is allways there... |

I am Professor Slim King on stage (Performing)... But I would NEVER say I'm Professor David Koenig in real life.
Meyers presented himself as Dr. Edward Saint while presiding over a Seance ... And he was in no way a believer..... I smell a rat.

Just watched the HOUDINI CODE (DVD).... They openly claim that Bess and Dr. Edward Saint were married. Where did they get this 'Fact"?
There are a flurry of intentional inaccuracies at the very end of the video that are easily proven false......

Slim--you need to obtain a copy of the October 1995 issue of Magic. It's still available on their website for $6.50, and a bargain for the information you will receive on Bess and Saint:
http://www.magicmagazine.com/catalog/pro......ts_id=50 It contains David Charvet's article "Beatrice Houdini" which details much about their relationship, and more information on Saint that you're searching for. According to magician Arnold Furst, who met Bess and Saint at the P.C.A.M. convention in July 1934, he believes that they were indeed married. Furst became a close friend of the couple and visited them on a daily basis. He also worked as Saint's typist and secretary for a time. According to Furst, if they had not been married, it would have been a violation of the Mann Act, a law enforced at that time that made it a crime for any man to transport an unmarried woman across state lines for immoral purposes. Hardeen also believed that Bess was living in sin. When Jack Hayman visited her on the West Coast from New York, he relayed Hardeen's belief. She replied, "How can he be so stupid? He knows me well enough to know that I wouldn't be traveling with someone unless I was married to him!" |
