From the ad copy:
"It is a book that contains within it a universal principle that can really strengthen any prop less mentalism that you perform. Contained within are the methods behind thought of card routines, thought of coin routines, which hand games, guess who, and billet less name guesses and even a thought of card over text message." So today I finished reading Ben Cardall's new book "Ratiocination" (Paid for it, not a review copy), and my mind is already spinning with idea on how to use this great principle. What's the book about?: The book is basically about being able to know for certain if someone is lying or telling the truth and how to use that knowledge in various routines (there are 4 which in turn use : Cards, Coins, Pictures and a Though of Name) Is it sure fire?: The principle itself is 100% sure fire, and yet it depends on what effect/routine you use it with, Ben gives both methods that are bold and those that will work every time. Some more info and my thoughts: It's great and definitely workable, the book is nicely written and altogether looks nice The principle at play is really flexible and there are tons of things you can apply it to (already came up with few more , minutes after reading it) The routines in the book include Ratiocination with cards, when you can tell them what card they are thinking of, in which hand they decided to hold it, and if it's face up or face down without looking at them. (can be done with your own or borrowed deck, or even without a deck with slight change of method). In the Thought of Name routine, Ben describes both a prop-dependand and prop-less way of guessing a though of name ( Only part I didn't like as much but that's mostly because I already have another preferred method for doing this, Ben's method is still good though and worth keeping at the back my mind). The book also includes various deduction techniques (for example, telling cat and dog people apart, spotting smokers, etc... , even one deduction techniques aimed specifically at magicians and mentalists). And possibly the first actually impressive effect ever, that you can do through text message. (i'm definitely going to start freaking people out with that). In short, this is a great book with practical informations and truly worth the investment. Like I said there are already other uses I came up with for this and will start exploring them soon. If any of Ben's future projects are as good as this, than I'm definitely looking forward to them.

I couldn't agree more with Michael, he said everything you need to know.
It is a really sneaky method, that Ben shares in this Book. And like Michael mentioned, the method can be used for so much effects. If you are at least a little bit creative, you will come up with own ideas on how to use this. You can even use the method over the phone/skype/text message and it works in every language. The deduction tips in this book are also very helpful and practical. You can perform Ratiocination anytime, anywhere, on stage, close up and so on. All in one this a great purchase, and the book is well worth the price. Quote:

'You see, but you do not observe. The distinction is clear.' (Sherlock Holmes - 'A Scandal in Bohemia')
Ben literally takes Holmes thinking and helps inspire your creativity to make that distinction. This small book's a great catalyst. Good to see Ben's years of development coming to fruition. |

Had this performed over text for me. Really killer stuff.
Ben is an expert in his craft. His presbetation was spot on even through text! The effect I experienced: I grabbed any car I wanted from my deck (without telling Ben.) I was told to play the part of a Truth teller or liar. Ben then did a baseline test on me asking four random questions. I then threw the random card in the air. In my case, it landed face up. Ben told me to choose either hand to put it in. I did so. He then asked me two questions about the orientation of the card, however I was still playing the part of the liar or truth teller so he didn't know whether I was lying or telling the truth. Ben then gave me a quite accurate personality reading based on my answers and proceeded to tell me which hand the card was in and if it was face up or face down. He proceeded to tell me the exact card I thought of and removed from the deck (well the suit was slightly off but it was close enough to be a hit!) Over all, I was very impressed. I understand the general principle which is extremely clever. I have no clue how he knew what he knew. Very good thinking here. Ben also told me it is 100% in person but he wanted to perform the bold approach. I would really love to pick this up in the future. It's definitely been added to my wish list. |

I read this book over and over again. because it is full with good advices and nice principles. after you read it you see the people around you different.
i can see myself doing this principle and incorporate it in other routines to make my life easier and more importantly to get rid of a few props. because the principle that is taught is 100% surefire if done correctly. Well done, Ben… (: |

I have been using Bens techniques for lie detection and how to tell if someone prefers dogs or cats continuously since first reading them earlier last year.
I absolutely love Bens thinking and this book is filled with hidden gems and amazing techniques you can easily adapt to your own style. Highly recommend Kind regards Art

Thanks everyone! it is only available through me directly at the minute. Shakuni, there are a couple of ideas for people who want to rely on body language alone and there a huge array of others as well. I tried to cover enough ideas for every preference

As the popularity of the prop-less approach has increased over the past few years, so too has the number of detractors.
Magicians, especially (even those who dabble in mentalism or use bold methods in their own work), doubt the efficacy and reliability of these methods and approaches. Included amongst the ranks of these "Doubting Thomas's" are a large number of thinkers and performers I respect and even idolise, who argue that these methods lack the reliability of the traditional methods, and that the processes required for much of this work are theatrically compromising and inelegant. In many cases, I have a large amount of sympathy with this viewpoint. Not so with Ben Cardall. Ratiocination is incredible. It is real, and yet it is reliable. The main principle contained in this fantastic work has no greater chance of failure than any traditional method (of course, we must always account for freak incidents or arses for spectators). The effects Ben describes, especially the card and name revelation are simply fantastic! And the principle is so simple and adaptable that you will easily be able to move it into a large number of other routines. Furthermore, the information presented on certain aspects of deduction is simply incredible, and I've been using several of these ideas as stand-alone pieces. Sugar theory, for me, would have been worth the price (it very much suits my character, as anyone who's met me will understand.) Therefore one gets so much more than a simple (yet brilliant) lie-detector demonstration from this set of routines. Both presentation and explanation are very comprehensively covered, including an entire segment on performing the effect via text or messenger. The writing style is light, fun and easy to follow. So clear is the explanation and so elegant the principle, that I was able to begin to implement these ideas and concepts immediately I stopped reading. And it has yet to fail me. So to conclude, even amongst the chaps I mentioned at the start of this post, I can see very few possible detractors for Ben's work here. Ben is somehow succeeding in creating and performing things that are so much closer to the real thing than the rest of us, yet with a level of reliability many in the community would envy. This work is no exception. With a small amount of entirely justifiable process and potentially no props, Ben has created a method which allows the performer to reliably read the mind of his/her spectators'. I highly recommend this work. Fantastic job, Ben! Best wishes to all, Ross. |

If you're still stuck on the fence and uncertain on whether this will be your "thing" then I think my video review will help you out. I have a review of Sherlockian AND Ratiocination posted up right now! If you already own Sherlockian then skip to about the thirteen minute mark, but if not then just check out the whole thing and contact Ben to pick up your copies.
