Arthur – Christopher Wielh
Product description : The last Murphys product I reviewed was Bandwidth and I was amazed by the strengh of the routine and the quality of the props. Arthur is the latest release from Murphys with which you will able to stop time and have the deck held only by one card. It doesn't sound that exciting when you read about it, let's find out what are the reactions I got from it. Price and where to buy it : This is sold at $35 and you can find it in nearly every Murphys Magic partner shop. What you get : You get a very classy and thin cardboard box with inside the gimmick. It is made out of red bicycle cards but you can adapt it to any back design you want. You also get a link with downloadable instructions. As with all Murphys release, the quality is one of the best amongs the magic company, they put a lot of care into these. Explanations are clear and very easy to follow. Very satisfied with what I got. Teaser : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfyuOaaToMo The pros and the cons : Here is the core of my review, let's begin with the cons, as I will usually be doing, I prefer to keep the good things for the end. THE CONS : - I wouldn't use the deck for another trick other than Arthur. Yes you could perform some routines but it's better to have a fully ungimmicked deck. - As I said, deck is not examinable but I don't think it's a problem. THE PROS : - This is !@#$** genius ! I love it so much, very clever, very simple but the plot does mean something to the spectator and the visual and feelings you get from it are insane. - You can adapt the gimmick to any back design you want, meaning you're limited to standard bicycle deck. - About 2/5 of the deck is gimmicked meaning that, if you want to, there are ungimmicked card so you can perform other tricks with the deck before switching it for another one. - I found that Murphys are putting more and more great products out, wasn't too keen on some but for a few months, they have been putting out real worker that will blow people's minds. - The visuals you get from it are amazing because it happends in the hands of the spectator (and we know it's the strongest magic you can perform). It seems like time has stopped and gravity doesn't exist anymore, very cool. - With a little bit of imagination, you can completely use it for others tricks ! Overall rating : I don't carry a lot of gimmicked deck but this one will be with me ! I can't recommend this enough, 4/4 hearts. As for the difficulty level, just be confident with the gimmicks and you should be fine, no manipulations needed, 2/5 stars. Similar products : I don't know similar trick which allows you to perform such effect.. Well done Christopher !

I just received this a few days ago and am finally having a chance to play with it. I'm VERY excited, but I had to remove another 7 cards from the deck. Otherwise, I didn't get a suspension...I got a "slowing of gravity" type of effect. Is this normal?

That's normal if you use a brand new deck out of the box, but there is no need to remove cards, watch the full video where they talk about how to prepare your other cards in the deck.

My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

I bought this based on great reviews on this thread, but I've used this 4-5 times and it gets a lukewarm reaction. It's a mostly forgettable trick compared to my other effects in my set. Gonna play with it a few more times to see if I can tweak my performance or framing of this effect before I decide to sell mine.
To carry a gimmicked deck just to do this one trick that doesn't get amazing reaction is a waste of pocket space. |

To itsmagic/Pegasus....
I have coupled Arthur with Wayne Houchin's Counterfeit.. and boy am I having fun with this ...it is through the roof every time.... was thinking of mentioning this combination for awhile but your recent comments spurred me to action... we all are different performers and I am sure not like you guys... but when the spec after picking a card holds it and is suddenly suspended I go crazy.. I show great emotion...it is a tense and exciting moment that way... it really frames the action...rather than a deck stuck to a card trick... I delicately have opened hands around the suspended deck and have this moment only for a few seconds.. liken to a floated dollar bill up in the air for a second or two.. the spec can't keep up when it is framed that way.. I go to another person and with a death grip allow him to try to pull the card out... I go back to original spec reminding briefly the story about King Arthur the only one who can pull the sword Excaliber out of the stone ..get the original spec to old single card for a second or two and then spread the cards so the card is taken out by the original selecting person... in some ways it can be a dry trick but with my added excitement it plays well for those few seconds each time... now here is what you are missing... I was going to do a card rise with this but gave that up when I matched this new Arthur with Coutnerfeit...the latter is just so wonderful in many ways and you know there are hundreds of torn and restored card tricks...hundreds..well this one is just ...CLEAN...and you end with a special souvenir for spectator that chose the card.... this kills.. without giving too much away here is why it works... I am forcing the card for the second trck... now it is not much of a force because I go right to the card's identity immediately almost like a joke..."I don't know what the card is..." I look at it "king of hearts how hard was that!!!" and then go into Arthur...As old cups and balls guy ( I am old 64 last week) I am way ahead... ok so Counterfeit might not be your choice well what might you do to use a forced card where its name might be innocently known at the start... I will let you figure that one out.. but for me this pair is sensational. it stands alone as a little act.. so in my diatribe here I am telling you you have frame the suspension with some emphasis..emotion on my part comes easy...its a quiet trick suddenly elevated.. I don't think it stands on its own and needs a follow up ... maybe card warp... maybe sharpie thru card... maybe card in lemon with matching corner...I might guess there are certainly a lot of choices in the card world but you have forced a card at an innocent time and with time gone by that works further to your success. so I can listen to you guys complain that it is not good enough to meet your standards as I have the most fun with this most anything else in quite awhile. Don't throw it away. give it another chance...it is subtle but in many ways it is way cool. Marty Greenville,SC |
