Hi,
For a show that is planned on May 31th, the organisers asked me to vanish a tube (height 31 cm, diameter 12 cm). The tube would serve as a "time capsule" wherein thet participants of the party would put written wishes for the celebrated child (12 years old). This tube should vanish and reappear later when the child will be 20 years old. With that strange request in mind, I try to find a way of making the tube to disappear. Personally I don't like the disappearance. I prefer to change it into something else, like a silk production, perhaps confetti, two doves, ... Would anyone like to share an idea for a vanish or a change of the tube? Thank you in advance for any help. Peter |

Consider any method for vanishing a wine bottle
without explicit detail, you might wrap it up in paper as if for mailing, then smash it flat later to "send it into the 4th dimension" the bursting paper could be filled with confetti. Many ways to get the tube out during the wrapping process and the paper will hold the shape for the necessary delay.

Build a table with a trap, then install a smoke pot in the table. Set the cylinder on the table. Clap your hands and the smoke pot goes off, then the cylinder drops through the trap and under the curtain covering the table top. Foot switch on floor to set off the smoke pot. Trap can be opened by pulling a string at the rear.

Wow! I can think of MANY ways to do this! The ideas already given are good.
Are they supplying the tube? If not, what about a tube made from heavy rolled paper with a real lid on top? There are plenty of decorator papers that would make a very convincing prop. There can be a partition so the top area can hold the messages (which you would place inside yourself after gathering them). The lower section may be filled with anything. Place it into a paper bag, remove your load and then crush the bag. You might even consider making a fake tube to resemble a real one. At some point switch, and proceed as above.

There is a problem with doing a vanish, it gets little response from the audience. That is why there is an old saying, "never finish your act with a vanish", it is not that they are not good tricks, it is, that it leaves the audience stunned and waiting to see what will happen next, or will it reappear.
I have experienced this with the small vanishing bird cage, because they come up after the show and ask, "where did the cage go." That is why I suggested the smoke effect. This will also garner some reaction from the audience as well as cover some of the action. |

It might be more effective if you just vanished the contents of the tube, in which case a Grant Crystal Silken Cylinder would be just the thing. Have them drop in the papers and then put the tube over the cylinder. When the tube is removed the papers are gone and inside the tube is a silk which says something clever like "Back to the Future! See you in 20 years!" or any other clever saying you can write on a silk with a magic marker. Of course at this point, the transparent cylinder can be seen completely empty (you might have to get them to write their notes on tissue paper!) and the cover tube can be removed by the "celebrated child" whom you accuse of having the papers hidden inside the cover tube (beating the audience to the punch) which of course he denies and shows the tube all around. If you get a chance, release the hidden papers and place them inside the gimmick so this time you can hand the crystal cylinder to the celebrated child and put the cover over it, allowing him to remove it as before and dump out the time traveling papers.

Thank you, friends, for all your reactions and great suggestions. I feel I can use some of the ideas.
Michaels question is very important: the organisers supply the tube themselves. Another issue is that they want me to vanish the tube with its content. So I think I would go for funsways idea, together with Jim Gerrish's suggestion to produce a message silk. Bills suggestion with the trap and the smoke pot would be very spectacular on a stage, but I wouldn't use it in parlor situations for a small group. I asked the organisers to send me a photo and actual sizes of the tube. Perhaps I can make a duplicate to switch it with the real one. |

A second issue is whether the audience knows you are a magician or not. What is their expectation as to what will happen to the tube?
This can influence your choice of vanish method and any related production. (framing) For example, if the tube vanishes unexpectantly in a shower of glitter you can refer to a StartTrek Transporter. Alternately, if they know you are a magician, what will you now do with the silk produced at the vanish?

Rather than have them send you a picture of the tube, if you're going to make a dupe, have them send you the tube itself. Bring it with you to the show. There are subtleties a photo can't pick up.
