Thank you brett
just my opinion. if anyone is having troubles here are some tips: 1. change the lead to a softer one 2. cut a longer piece of sh+m, so that it covers also the writing area. like this you don't have to worry to loose the little something because it sticks also on the writing area 3. I would use it with a stack of businesscsrds, the second one on the stack is shi**ed hope that helps

Out of interest, how do you close the cover with the gimmick in place?

Good question.
I just move the thing to the back where I have a little s**m material under the back cover to hold it there. Similar handling to the post-it note set-up. A nice self contained unit that sits in my pocket.

Just thought I'd add my thoughts on this.
I'm primarily a magician but have been evolving into more mentalist type routines. Funny how this seems to happen often as magicians get older (wiser too perhaps") Last time I used any type of writer was decades ago when I was maybe 12 years old, and that was very briefly. Don't think I even ever tried it out on my family members. So basically I would consider myself to be a complete novice. I can totally understand that if you are an experiencd user with a favorite writer already, then there is absolutely no need for this gimmick for you. It's just a slightly different way of accomplishing the same goal. But if you're new to this skill then this writer may offer some advantages. It will to some, while others may find it more difficult. Everyone's different. But I don't feel it will personally teach you any bad habits that you would have to relearn later. In fact, I was surprised to find that the month I spent practicing with a more traditional writer over 40 years ago seemed to stick with me as it came back really fast. I like the black box routine as taught on the video by Matt Johnson, and I'm glad they included that box as they really didn't have to. It certainly isn't necessary but it does provide some additional misdirection for newbies starting out. It can help buy you a little time during performance until your writing skills get up to speed. So it's kind of like having a set of training wheels. I also like the idea of it being a self-contaned unit in your pocket. So overall, I like this gimmick and look forward to getting some use out of it. I like that it gave you some starter routines and ideas to get you up and running. The original writer I bought 40 years ago came with virtually no instructions and no routines and this is probably why my unknowledgeable, inexperienced 12 year old brain never did anything with it. Not to mention the fact that it's very difficult for most 12 year olds to pull off any kind of mentalism without looking silly. So this could end up in the drawer, at this point I seriously doubt it but time will tell. I am happy with the product and glad I purchased it. If you're new to this type of thing and been wanting to try it but wasn't sure where to start (yep, that's me) then this may be a good starting point to get your feet wet. It does what it claims and seems to be well made. My biggest gripe is I'd like to find something similar that writes in ink, works in the real world, and isn't messy. There's probably something out there I'm not aware of. But in the meantime, the Freedom Writer will allow me to do some pretty incredible things using only a stack of business cards or post it notes if that is how I choose to perform it. |

Yesterday I road tested a simple, bespoke unit I put together using the FW to facilitate pocket writing.
Boy does it work well. Much better than the old golf pencil. Very little fumbling with a minimum amount of movement in the pocket (no more 'playing with oneself' during performance ). Those who have it will be able to work out what I made, I'm sure.

I had a chance to examine and try FW, and I must say everything its heavly gimmicked
the idea behind it, looks nice at first glance, and the package is full of things on it! papers, envelopes, gimmicks, cards, nice box, presentation... that's nice, they didn't forget anything, but its not very practical in my opinion The idea might look innovative, but I would not use it, I prefer something attached to my finger for better precision, i really feel any sw*mi gives you more freedom than FW, If you want have empty hands, you might give it a try, maybe fits your needs,

Being into Magic for over half a century, thousands of effects/ props/ books etc. have passed through my hands - some good and some not so good. So you will agree and grant me that it isn't necessary to physically own an effect so as to give an opinion (a personal opinion) - Right!

Fell into the trap of buying this on pre-order a few weeks ago and have to agree with others on this forum that I feel this was massively misadvertised, I think it's only fair to warn potential buyers of this.
The advert indicates it is not a swami as the term 'UN' prior to indicates the negative (e.g unknown, unhappy) so 'UNSWAMI' would indicate a swami is not utilised here..yet it is. Is it stuck to your finger? No but your finger obviously needs to connect to it when writing so technically when you are writing it is stuck to it. Okay so when you move your hand away you can show them empty but from a psychological point of view why would you do this anyway? I can already use a swami and it's worth mentioning I find it easier to use than this. As Rasmus has previously stated as well, there is a possibility the writer falls down to the floor during performance. The plastic case is a nice idea but again adds nothing to the routine and just seems to overcomplicate it. It also looks cheap and there's no real justification for it. The rest of the props it has to be said are well made but again as others have said this just seems to overcomplicate what should be a very simple routine. I'm not really sure what the creators were aiming for here as not unlike 'Fair Play' from earlier this year this takes a standard straightforward mentalism effect and makes it a gimmicky, unlogical magic trick. The guys I feel sorry for the most are the dealers that are likely to be stuck with these items once the initial hype dies down and more than likely having to deal with a few unhappy customers along the way who may feel they've been duped a little bit into buying this. Like I said the only pro's I can give this is that the gimmicks are all extremely well produced but that aside for me it is just completely impractical, does not improve on a standard swami routine (if anything it makes it more complicated) so for that I will give it 2 out of 10. Sorry if that sounds harsh as I always try to be as positive as I can be with reviews (check out any previous ones I have done) but I'm really struggling to find anything good to say about this. |
