The McD in our town just installed new ordering kiosks. No longer take your order by the human at the counter. Nope. Order from the kiosks.
I've sat there and watched customer after potential customer WALK OUT because of it. Either that, or pitch a !@#$% at the counter because they hate it so much.
The difficult must become easy, the easy beautiful and the beautiful magical.

Glad to see this thread still going after 4 years. As an original contributor, I'd like to make a point. All of this talk about appropriateness of $15 min wage, etc. is pointless. Market forces will always dictate the outcome. The government can interfere, but it will have no real long term effect. You cannot change one part of a complex system without effecting the other parts. Although I know Landmark doesn't like the idea of profits, they drive all human behavior. There has to be a win somewhere. In economics you can put your money in a business when there is a reasonable expectation of return or put it somewhere else when there's not. The one thing central planning never can capture is the variety of human genius on getting around and over problems, i.e. kiosks, etc. No one is owed a 'living wage' and no one will ever have one by fiat, only by opportunity. What is the creator of opportunity? It's human ingenuity, not government. Capitalism is the foundation of human interaction (I know Marx etal) and always wins out. Every socialist country had a thriving black market because it delivered what the people really wanted. Once we stopped foraging and grew our own food, we had a surplus. Once we had a surplus we began trading - capitalism. Socialism is a reaction relic of the industrial revolution and just as dead. Thanks to technology the proletariat is free to drive people in their Ubers.

I think the issue is the benchmark that minimum wage has become. I understand that higher cost of living areas require higher hourly wages, so places such as NYC should pay what the market allows.
The benchmark is my value based upon my skills and those of an unskilled laborer (Min Wage). Back when I was in college in the 80's minimum wage was $3.35/hour. I was fortunate enough to find a great job that paid $8/hour; which was more than double minimum wage. I felt it was a reflection upon my skill set. Spring forward... a minimum wage of $15/hour would IMO diminish the value of skilled labor. Unless skilled labor was at least double the minimum wage. If skilled labor paid $30 - $45/hour people would feel appropriately compensated for their skills; though inflation would soon emerge. I don't see it happening, but I can see how it would distress skilled workers. Note: I've used the term 'skilled labor' and not professional. That is another kettle of fish all together.
I still recall the day I met Beaker from the Muppets. He said to me "Meep, meep, mee mee mee Meep!", and that has made all the difference.

A wage arbitrarily arrived at based upon a workers "need" is not an economically sound system.

I worked at UPS in the 70s while in college and made $10/hour sorting boxes when the min was $2-3. Skill had little to do with it. $15 min wage is a political stunt that has no basis in reality. Why not $25? Wages are always tied to the market in some way. They may inflate at periods, but will always reflect supply and demand. |

I used the term 'skill' based upon the non-skill requirements of Mc'D's. Labor jobs always paid better if you could either work hard or fast (I was a roofer in the late 80's). I was only trying to shine some light on the perspective of some of the objectors. I don't think it will happen nationwide.

I broke down and ate breakfast at Mc'D's a few time while awaiting for another business to open, but have not eaten their burgers in years.
I do buy for the kids though.
