Hello Jheff,
What are your thoughts on using playing cards in mentalism effects? Are you generally in favor of using them, or do you tend to stay away from them? I'm really interested in reading your thoughts on this topic. Thanks, -Mark |

Hi Mark,
I don't see anything wrong with using playing cards in mentalism. The best mentalists (Dunninger, Cassidy, Fogel, Annemann, etc.) have all used playing cards. Myself, I even have a book on mentalism with playing cards (THE SHUFFLED MIND). And my current close-up set ends with a very powerful mentalism playing card effect. The one issue that I do have with playing cards is the size. One has to take that into consideration when adding that into your act. Also, I wouldn't include too many card effects and try to have a variety, though that general rule of thumb can certainly be broken, too. Finally, you do want to make sure that the card effect is direct and strong. I've seen far too many that are quite procedural and/illogical. - Jheff

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question, Jheff! I try not to use cards for more than one effect if I use them at all.
Cheers. |
