Surely this cannot be a coin with penny on one side and dime on the other-that would be just silly....I wonder, though, if the coin can be freely examined.

I love this effect!!!! I first saw it performed by Jeff and have since adapted to sugar packets, borrow bills & etc. such a cool idea. The change of the coin is a minor effect for me, when they open their phone and check the photo that is when they freak out.

The camera angle never shows the front of the coin---doesn't take much to figure out what's going on here.

I am also very curious to see more reviews. it is VERY hard to for me to accept that most anyone you would do this trick for would NOT immediately turn the dime over to check out both sides....right? and if the trick is indeed a 2-sided coin AND most people report that 9 out of 10 spectators do NOT turn it over to check this out, then I am in and will buy it. It could well be that my "magician" mindset is clouding my judgement. I hope that either there is more to the illusion OR that it turns out most people truly would not flip the coin over.

The routining of this looks very smart. In the video the spectator is holding a phone in one hand a coin in the other hand. Because of this, the spec can't grab the coin to inspect it, since their hand is occupied. I personally think this looks great and everyone commenting, for the most part, is thinking too much like a magician.
Just my two cents (or I guess I should say 11, hah)!

Ted-
They really don't. The presentation I use the effect happens while their hand is still closed. Them opening their hands on confirms it then I immediately bring up the phone so they switch gears. You then all day to do what you need to them. People aren't dumb but if you guide them right it is fine. Ryan |

Encouraging...if a few more people chime in with honest testimony to this effect, I'm in. I do love the idea of the trick...just need to rid myself of the nagging feeling mentioned in my prior post before I drop $20. thanks to those that responded so quickly.

I thought that this has been out for a while and after reading the 2011 link, it reminds me that it has. I've been doing this for a few years using a D&P ins**t for the cellphone pic. Could never remember where I picked up the idea from, but more than likely when it was written up in Magic. I do believe it used a double sw***h for the gimmick and real coins, so it's be interesting to see what's been changed or improved.

It's obvious to magicians what is happening(maybe even lay people will hazard a guess) but as a worker, at the end, everything can be handed out and they have a souvenier.
Never thought of using a phone in combination with this. Will give it a go at 8 events over the weekend and put my feedback on here. Think it's going to get good reactions because it's easy to do and the effects(2 of them) is simple to recal for an audience. Mike Donoghue |

Hmmm, don't know. I once tried doing Ponta the Smith's spellbound for my Dad and he said "it's a double sided coin." Which it wasn't, and he knows nothing of magic or gaffs, but to him it seemed the only logical solution. So he'd never seen or heard of a double sided coin before, but that's where his mind went when presented with the effect. Maybe he's just a thinker, but I could see that being an issue if you do this effect for intelligent people. Love to hear about actual experiences, though, because that's what matters.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

This reminds me of Double Exposure by Asi Wind except with that effect, which is done with cards, there are no gimmicks to get caught with and its totally impromptu.

Hey guys,
Jeff Prace here, and I'd be happy to answer any questions and concerns relating to Coin on Call. To start off... while I do teach on the download, I have no personal gain. Aljaz rightfully makes all of the money here as this is his brilliant invention. I have been performing this almost daily for the past 4-5 years, and I have never had anyone suspect a double-sided coin. No one has tried to flip the coin over. This routine is constructed with this in mind. For example, when the spectator is initially pinching the coin, they don't turn it around for two reasons. First, since it's a borrowed penny, there's nothing to doubt. After the penny transforms to a dime in their hand, their opposite hand is holding their cell phone; they have no free hands to inspect the dime. This change is a very powerful moment. The simple switches are also so easy because of the built-in misdirection. When asking if they have a cell phone, you can switch that penny for an elephant. After the change, all the attention is on the picture taken earlier. Another elephant can be switched in here. It's SO simple. Regarding Asi Wind's amazing trick. There have been many tricks using this concept. Names such as Paul Gertner and Justin Miller come to mind (among others). As noted earlier in this topic, Aljaz published an early version of this in MAGIC Magazine, so he didn't even know Asi was working on a handling. I have performed this around the world. I did it with Euros in Spain. I did it with Pounds in the UK. (I showed Dave Penn at Blackpool, and it was the best trick he saw at the convention.) It can work in most countries with common pocket change. The reason I fully back this project is because I know how powerful it is. I have performed this since I read it in MAGIC in 2011. The download video contains four years of my own thoughts on the trick, as well as all of Aljaz' tips. It's a 15-minute video, and A LOT is covered. A fun story... my roommate (and best friend) sees a lot of magic. When I showed him this, he FREAKED. He actually misremembers parts of the trick -- as a lot of people do. He SWEARS I showed him the picture of him holding a penny right before it changed to a dime (on his camera phone). And every time he sees the picture, he tells people. Don't discount this trick because you might know the core method. This is a masterpiece with a lot going on behind the scenes. I'd be happy to talk further about it if people have questions. |
