Henning Nelms claims in his book "Magic and Showmanship" that Houdini was a fantastic escape artist because of his showmanship, but a run-of-the-mill magician because he failed to bring that showmanship to bear and ended up being just another trickmonger.
His is an excellent book, by the way, and I heartily recommend it to any aspiring young magician - and, frankly, to some of the technically astute 'old hands'.
