I moved to Vegas about 6 months ago for work so I could begin building my act. I'm finally settled in so looking to begin networking and allowing things happen. Does anyone know how often and when the SAM meets here in Vegas?

I went to the S.A.M. site and there appears to be no S.A.M. assembly anywhere near Las Vegas. I believe there is an I.B.M. ring there, though. I would visit a magic shop and ask. There used to be a shop called Denny & Lee's there, and it may still be as far as I know. If not, there are Houdini Magic shops in a few casinos.

Welcome juggling1!
I don't know anything about a S.A.M. assembly, but there is indeed (as billmarq suggested) an I.B.M. ring (Ring 257). They meet every month at Denny & Lee (Now Las Vegas Pro Magic, I believe)on Dean Martin (just south of Tropicana), and all are welcome. I'm an international member, but have never been to any of the local ring meetings personally. You can check them out at www.ibm257.com/ Hope this helps!

I went to the houdini magic shop in the NEW YORK NEW YORK casino.... Man, it was less than desirable. It sells all of the things that you would imagine a novelty shop would sell. I went in looking for spongeballs as two of mine had gotten lost the previous night at the Carnival Bar. Long story short, I was incredibly dissapointed. Not only were they lacking any real magic shop inventory, It seems as though the help that was hired to work there is taught several basic gimmicks, but that's it.... IMO those places don't deserve the title of a magic shop.... I had a really good time aside, I did a lot of close up in the bars around. As I'm a motorcycle enthusiast I also rented a Harley Davidson rode 250 miles, it is definitely gorgeous country. |

Shops on the strip will naturally appeal to a more general customer since LV is a tourist place. I was not really recommending them for professional magic purposes, rather as a possible source of information. I have dropped into a couple of the Houdini shops there and have had pleasant conversations with the staff.

I went into a Houdini's on the strip, can't remember which one. I asked where a real magic shop was, and they told me where to find one. It was so long ago I don't remember the name.
I do remember meeting a young man, who showed me an effect he was working on, it turned out to be The Asher Twist. (Yes, the young man was Lee Asher, when he was still attending school in Las Vegas). The clerk at the Houdini's also told me about Gary Darwin's meeting, and luckily, I was there on a Wednesday. I met Gary, and he asked my wife and I to stop by his house the next day to visit his museum. I'll never forget that trip, it was amazing. Boomer |
