I was just thinking about what a classic the sub-trunk has become. I mean, Houdini really made that illusion popular.
It's amazing that it is still used to this day, and with lightning speed.

While Houdini may have invented (or at least developed) the Sub-Trunk... I think Doug Henning is the one who has to go down as having made it so popular. y'think?

Actually, Houdini purchased the effect from a circus act I believe. But he is the one who brought the trick into the lime light of his time.
Henning really helped as well. But I would say The Pendragons are the one's who probably perform it the most...and fastest!

Didn’t Houdini call the trick ’Metamorphosis’? He used to exchange places with Bess.
I agree the Pendragons make the effect their very own and with such lightening speed. Even though we know how it’s achieved, it’s still pretty quick! |

They have always impressed me with their magical presentations. And as far as their trunk bit, it's so quick you might think it was trick photography!

I believe the sub trunk ("Metamorphosis") will be around for a long, long time. Even though most of us know how it works, I am always amazed by it.
The speed of the switch seems to be getting faster all the time. Maybe the sub trunk has stayed around for so long more out of a challenge..."I can do it faster than you!! " But this illusion, along with the Zig-Zag illusion will live throughout eternity. Bengi |

It is indeed one of the classics of magic and will remain so.

The metamorphasis is on of my favorites. the thing that makes it so boggling is the fact that the average person who doesn't know much about magic has not one clue on how its done. the effect of the sub trunk is very strong. and thats the kind of Illusion I'm into... things that make you go "huh?"

I agree...the Sub Trunk has become a classic illusion...but now magicians are thinking of it as a race! Everyone is trying to do it faster than before...
I think Criss Angel has really brought the sub trunk to a new level. He eliminated the cloth and does the exchange in record time. Very original presentation, too. -Corey

I think that the statement above "Even though we know how it is done" First you shouldn't be impressed soly by the secret of an effect. When performing at a convention for magicians do you think they are looking to see if you can fool them. No, they are looking for performance.
The lay public also looks a lot at performance as I am sure you know. Just be careful how you come off sounding like the secret is the only thing to look at. I know of a magician/illusionist that has a show that has probably cost well over $75,000, but I wouldn't pay $1.00 to see him perform. Why? Well although he has some of the newest, most deceptive magic, he has no personality, and magicians nor laymen, are entertained, by him. He should have spent some money on a personality. |

Well Corey, not to arguemenatl, but I must stand by Copperfield. On time, Copperifled is faster with his Cacoon illusion.

MAgic74Josh, I suppose you are talking about DC but this is not relevant.
Relevant is when you say "Well although he has some of the newest, most deceptive magic, he has no personality, and magicians nor laymen, are entertained, by him." I don't agree with you because of this question: Do you entertain EVERYONE? I know your answer and I don't need to be a magician Please, he inspired many people to begin in magic and those now are happy. That's what it's all about. Magic is for magicians? You can't satisfy everyone. The wonder and the capacity of dreaming is in all of us, just enjoy it. Steve, this is a really good illusion. I don't have any documentation on that but I have seen some versions. The Pendragons are great, Copperfield's version too, because of their personality's and team effort. Doug Henning, I never saw, so I can't say anything. I hope one day to see a tape of him. |

Even though we know how it’s achieved, it’s still pretty quick! There are so many versions and so many methods "how" it is achieved becomes irrelevant. Speed is also quite irrelevant if you have the performance off - look at Siegfired and Roy - not the fastest, but one of the most entertaining. Greg Frewin's version is also original and stunning. |

Once more time, I will mention the spanish magician Pedro Tercero. In his last show, he performs a great "subtrunk" , not only by the speed of the switch (it´s like Pendragons performance) but also by the "acting" way .
Very soon I hope to have the Pedro´s subtrunk , captured from Spanish TV. Get more info : http://www.pedrotercero.com Thanks |

I agree that Greg Frewin's is a great new version, but Criss Angel's the fastest I've seen. Well, at least as fast as the Pendragons.

Both Angel's and the Pendragon's are excellent... I have seen plans for the sub-trunk of Houdini's era and looking at what it has become today is amazing I am glad that this has never and hopefully will never die.

The Majestix are the best and most entertaining in my humble opinion. I saw them live at Caesar's Magical Empire in Vegas and they were outstanding!!!! They catch you so off guard by doing it right away. I love it. Everyone else is good, but the Majestix are my favorite.

Justin... you're right on!
The Majestics have always been one of my favorite teams when it came to the trunk... been years since I've seen them perform but their handling is amongst the more original and mystical I've ever seen.
