When I preform mentalism with cards I get great reactions but also I get the response of I'll just Youtube it, or did you learn that on youtube? I feel by making that assumption they are degrading the effect and also making any effects I preform afterwards less amazing. I was wondering if anyone else has this problem and how they have managed it.

I never get this in restaurants but I'm sure people Google things later. I suspect you're performing for friends and that's a different dynamic.
Years ago I could challenge people with a riddle and they would come back to me weeks later asking for the answer. They would scream when I told them the answer and tell me all the stories of how they all worked on it for all that time. The riddle became a family story that they would tell for years. These days the most I can expect is that they won't Google the answer until they get in the car. Still lots of fun but a great deal is lost. |

The only time I've had that problem was with friends and doing mentalism for people that know that I am also a magician. When presented as true mentalism, I don't get that at all. Most recently, I performed Osterlind's version of Clip Line for a friend. They guy totally freaked out (I don't normally do strong magic/mentalism for friends unless part of a show). He immediately tried looking it up, but of course could not find it.
Having said that, I hate how much good stuff is on youtube; I think it is disrespectful to the art, particularly the presence of so much proprietary suff. In part this is because of how badly the tricks are often done. I recently saw a version of Kimlat's triumph that was so bad that they guy essentially revealed the method during the performance. I also saw a similarly bad version of Osterlind's PCT, which also revealed the methods with its ineptitude. |

I love the riddle analogy. They are spectators that view mentalism as real and other who view it as a riddle. Most audience don't have the dedication and knowledge and give up after a few minutes of searching .How to do you find what you don't know what you looking for.

MeetMagicMike has it right. Your friends have a hard time seeing you as anything but a friend and will just not be as impressed as strangers. The same goes for family.

The riddle is a challenge, here is the problem and whats the solution?
It a clear contract between you and the spectators. So my question is are you you presenting your magic in a similar away? I had a friend that was all ways getting challenged and caught. And it made him nervous which made matters worse. I helped not by cleaning up his tricks but finding his true motivation and changing it. It worked. This might not be the case bit I think you might befit from looking at ways to cover your tracks. Here are a few others. 1- Don't use names off effects, 2- Change the props, 3- Find different ways to do the same thing, These are just quick notes if you want to know more just ask.
Enjoy your magic,
and let others enjoy it as well! |

Can I be brutally honest here?? Have you considered the possibility that your magic is not up to par and you need to step up your game??
I can't recall a time anyone has ever asked me about YouTube, that is not to say people don't look up what I do or anything like that ... I just feel they realize I didn't just start doing magic yesterday and my presentation reflects that. It sounds to me you are doing "tricks" they believe they can figure out ... I don't present my magic as tricks, there is nothing for people to figure out. There is no "how" did I do that; I did it with "magic", that's how. I plan to fire up the studio when it warms up a little and want to do a video on this very topic - real magic vs magic tricks. I find many magicians create this hole for themselves by presenting their magic in a way that challenges people to figure out what you are doing - don't do that! You need to tell them how you do it ... you do it with magic, that's how. -JoeJoe

If you do mental magic with the expectation that your friends will genuinely think that you can read minds, you are fooling yourself more than you are fooling your audience. When it comes to an audience of strangers, with the right setting and the right presentation, some wifi, some won't, so what? Next.

It's not a hassle of looking through youtube it's quite easy to find a trick if it's on there
