Here is a fun read for coin people from NPR.
“Feb. 24, 2004 -- Flipping a coin may not be the fairest way to settle disputes. About a decade ago, statistician Persi Diaconis started to wonder if the outcome of a coin flip really is just a matter of chance. He had Harvard University engineers build him a mechanical coin flipper. Diaconis, now at Stanford University, found that if a coin is launched exactly the same way, it lands exactly the same way. The randomness in a coin toss, it appears, is introduced by sloppy humans. Each human-generated flip has a different height and speed, and is caught at a different angle, giving different outcomes. But using high speed cameras and equations, Diaconis and colleagues have now found that even though humans are largely unpredictable coin flippers, there's still a bias built in: If a coin starts out heads, it ends up heads when caught more often than it does tails. NPR's David Kestenbaum reports. *Note: In football's inaugural kickoff coin toss, the coin is not caught but allowed to bounce on the ground. That introduces an extra complication, one mathematicians have yet to sort out.” http://www.npr.org/features/feature.php?wfId=1697475 Bob |

Wow. That is pretty interesting.
I have noticed, as the article confirms, that when I flip a coin on heads it is more likely to land on heads. I always wondered if you could pretty much guarantee it. Chris |

Where may I find more information about this coin toss effect?
Many thanks. |

My wife telephoned me from her work to let me listen to the story as it aired on NPR. Shortly thereafter I e-mailed Dr. Diaconis to discuss another piece I had heard on the local NPR station (KPCC in Pasadena) that involved flipping coins. I await his reply eagerly.

In The Amateur Magicians' Handbook there is a mention that you can train yourself to flip a coin so that it would land heads any time. The idea is that you start with a large coin (old style silver dollar-sized), and flip it to the same height each time, then catch it. As a teenager (when I had a lot more time on my hands) I was able to get a coin to come up heads about 8 of ten times.

Good story!
Y'know, The Godfather here, Vinny Marini has a published method to do this with tremendous certainty, and so does Radek Makar I believe.

On my latest dvd The Godfather tips his hand , soon to be released .
I teach a coin toss that is almost 99 percent accurate. THE sepctator calls heads or tails, THE PERFORMER flips the coin in the air and the spectator catches it. the coin lands in spectators when he opens his hand it is what he called . I have been doing this since I am 13 years old. I have only shared this with a few magicians..... vinny ps this can be done with anty siee coin |

I remember learning how to flip a coin in a way such that the outcome was controlled. I got pretty good at it. The technique involved tossing the coin in a way that it wobbled, instead of flipping, but it looked like it was flipping through the air.

The wobbling technique is taught by Gary Kosninsky in his pamphlet heads or tails it is a excellent resourse.
my technioque is different it is a rotation effect and you cant tell the difference from a real flip vinny |

Gary's pamphlet is priceless! (Well, actually I did pay a price for it, so that's not entirely correct!) Really though, it works. I hit very high pecentages using his method. Freaks people out!
Thank you. Jim |

I glanced through a rather technical article on flipping coins a few years ago. My "take away" was that it did not matter how high you flipped the coin, but rather that it is caught at the same height as the coin was flipped. Other than air drag, the coin should rotate at the same speed on its upward journey as it does on the downward, and would bring itself back to the same orientation as it started.

Vlad that's fine however using what I call the "Marini money maker" coin flip.this is guarteed to land what ever the spectator calls. 99 percent of the time. even when they catch it in their hands and any size coin canj be used.
you will swear the coin is really turning over not mearely wobbling... I have did this to magicians and layman and they can not believe this is happening. they can eve catch the coin in their hands and it will land on the face they called..... vinny |
