Hello,
Just to be clear this isn't my area of magic/performing at all but I've just seen this thread and you've got me wondering if I could trouble you for your professional opinions (I'm also new to the Café so apologies if this isn't okay!) I sent to see a hypnotherapist several years ago to try and cure my phobia of snakes; partially because I was fed up of jumping at garden hoses but more so out of fascination with the process and what it might entail. It didn't seem to 'do' anything, I don't think I 'was hypnotised' and the hypnotherapist explained that hypnosis isn't suitable for everyone - myself included. This surprised me as my imagination is really active and quite vivid. Would it be worth me trying out another hypnotherapist at some point to see if it goes better, or was he right, are some people really not susceptible and it wouldn't matter who I went to, that wouldn't change? |

Phobias are probably one of the easiest and most successful problems treated with hypnotherapy. The problem is that there are a lot of bad hypnotherapists around amongst the good ones. Hypnosis is just a tool you should leave knowing you have or have not cured your phobia. Most phobias can be cured in a single session. I would look for hypnotherapists that also specialize in NLP and phobia cures. Phone a couple up. They should be able to tell you how long it will take and offer you a guarantee. It should take no longer than a single session. Speak to a few before deciding who to go with.

MP is right; go to another. It should be easy. Very few people can't be helped.

Please don't confuse hypnotherapy with stage hypnosis. Performers on this site are unlikely to leave any lasting effects on their audience once the performance has ended. Not saying you will get bad advice on here, and indeed some stage performers may also run private hypnotherapy practices, but a professional stage hypnotist is a totally different beast from a professional hypnotherapist.

Agreed, and do remember that this is an entertainment hypnosis forum and as in sticking with the rules and guidelines of the forum the debate about hypnosis and the discussion of therapeutical or clinical application of hypnosis is not permitted.

Its a bit late for those rules Mindpro as there have been many threads that have crossed over. And it has to be said you do get bad advice on here sometimes both therapeutic and for stage work. At least the info posted in this thread helps dispel some of the confusion and offers some help. I have been doing therapy coaching for more than 20 years. At all levels from ordinary members of the public to CEOs.

In my initial hypnotherapy training, I was told that 95% of people can be hypnotised - but not necessarily by the same person. It's certainly worth trying another hypnotherapist who will use different techniques. My favourite one for phobias is EFT, which doesn't need a formal trance induction at all.

Here is the thing Ive found.....too many hypnotists put too much emphasis on "being able to be hypnotized" and have set criteria to go out and "prove" someone has been hypnotized. When in fact therapy isn't about hypnosis or being hypnotized its about solving someones problem. When you focus on that hypnosis never becomes an issue the only issue is whether the problem has been solved or not. The truth is many hypnotherapists create problems that don't exist. If they were to focus on the client and removing their problem they would have a much easier time and the client would receive much more benefits. Getting clients to "perform" hypnotic phenomena to prove they have been hypnotized is the biggest red herring and unnecessary thing you could imagine. Get rid of that who the f&*^k cares lets make their lives better. Its not needed.
