If a TV magician said that there were no camera tricks and there were, then shame on him/her. If there was no mention then I guess it's OK if I didn't figure it out. It still seems like a cheap way out though. Maybe sometimes there isn't another way.

If you are talking about post production editing, that really isn't magic and is poor form. It gives magic on TV a bad name. Many magicians who were on TV in the early years found programs rejecting them because the audience would think it was a camera trick.
"Now here's the man with the 25 cent hands, that two bit magician..."

If you claim no camera tricks are used then you indeed shouldn't use them. However, everything has to be edited, so nothing is really exactly what happened. But that's different. If the effect would not work without a camera, then it's a camera trick to me. It's unfortunate because when some people are stumped they just say "it's just a camera trick!"

I'm always impressed by magic on TV where it is one shot that never cuts away. Then, you're seeing it like you're in the theater.
But I have seen a lot of magicians on TV use editing to cut out a key part of their presentation to make the illusion look even more incredible. For instance, having someone's name written on their arm in ash. If edited the right way, that can look like a miracle. But if you watched the whole unedited performance, it might seem less impressive. But, I think the best parts about magic on TV or video are the reactions from the spectators. I guess that's why we all do this. |

The only camera tricks I like are iphone camera tricks. Try Magic Trick Number 12 in the app store.

When you're performing live you need to do your best to missdirect your audience. I'd say the only "ok" camera trick is to point the camera to where a spectator would look.
