I've never seen this variant, but willing to guess it is a version of "Will The Cards Match" , popularized by Larry Becker and using Howard Adams's Ramasis principle. The cards are divided into two face down packets and you spell out words transferring cards from top to bottom of each packet. The spectator picks the packet you spell with and at the end of each spell you eliminate the top card of each pile placing them to one side. Eventually the last two cards match, then it is seen all the discarded pairs do too.

Stumbled upon this old thread - the version I have is slightly different, but is called "PERFECT MATCH" by Steven Bender (an Ickle Pickle product). Fun little trick!
