If you didn't know the method to cardboard contortionists, you would have been fooled IMHO. Those tears and piece fans are so strong and realistic. P and T's rationale of a neck ditch has absolutely nothing to do with the method. (Let's not call this poorly performed magic as this technique fools plenty of non magicians in the real world especially in coin work...) They fell for his bluff hook line and sinker and fooled them based on their description of the method. Nothing wrong with that, other magicians like Matthew Bich, Morgan and West, Swedish act Brynolf & Ljung (funnily enough using a bluff Sankey's paperclip) all used obvious bluffs to prompt the P and T to determine the wrong solution. Why he didn't challenge them there and then is another story, I'll accept he rationale of being a gracious performer.

I've got some sympathy for him. I think his mistake was doing too many tricks and not challenging them at the time.

Surprise, surprise...the so called JackMagic has started a new topic with a title that is presumptuous and rude. He has decided once again to slander one of the greatest influences in the history of magic. I love the Magic Café, but can we not have some kind of filter to weed out blatant disrespect of this degree? It is no wonder so many esteemed names in magic refuse to post. Why would they want to be subjected to the likes of people such as JackMagic that treat them with senseless hostile arrogance?
Jackmagic, who I find it sad does not have the guts to reveal his real name, has insulted on MC the likes of Colin Cloud, Morgan Strebler, Jon Allen, Cameron Francis, Christian Schenk, Wayne Dobson, Murphys Magic and not to mention the great country of Germany. This coming from a guy who has been accused of having as many as four different accounts with the same IP address. Yet, he is still allowed to continue to spew garbage and in this case get others to quickly chime in. If you are ever having a great day with a smile on your face, a spring in your step and want that to end, simply type JackMagic in the MC Quicksearch window and hit Go! JackMagic has manipulated more threads than Yigal Mesika. Who by the way has also not been able to escaped the insults of JackMagic on the Café as well. Anyone who has ever watched more than one P&T Fool Us episode knows that if you want to win incorporate a red herring within your set. That will allow you to fool them with their own knowledge. Then when Teller whispers in Penn’s ear the obvious solution or Penn himself thinks he saw the move all the performer has to say is…Sorry, you are incorrect. Bob_Hummer Quote: “Especially since P&T are actually quite easy to fool.” Really Bob…You truly think P&T would be easy to fool? What original material (or any material) would you perform to accomplish this feat? A false solution through a fake slight would be my chosen path of least resistance. So, you can either listen to a literal no name to judge the merits of Jay Sankey or let the thoughts of legends help you decide. "Jay Sankey has established a strong reputation as one of the top creators of innovative close-up magic."– Max Maven "Jay will go down in history as one of the funniest, ground breaking, and most creative magicians of all time."– Nathan Kranzo "Jay's bar-raising efforts have helped produce a generation of magicians with higher expectations."– David Acer "Jay's magic is as good as the magic anyone has ever created."– Paul Harris Let’s show a little more respect and appreciation to those that help us do what we do. I think they have earned it. Let’s try and be more positive…it’s almost Christmas. |

P&T are not really magic nerds in the way a lot of amateurs are. Especially when it comes to cards.
In the first episode I ever saw (here in the UK) - I saw them be fooled by a trick called 'Prior Commitment' by Simon Aronson. That is one of the strongest card tricks to be invented in the past 15 or so years. And it even involves a new principle in card magic. As such - it has attracted a lot of interest from magicians. Which is why I was surprised the buzz around this trick seemed to past P&T by. The same is true of 'Cardboard Contortionists'. This is one of Jay Sankey's most famous tricks. And again - P&T did not seem to be aware of it. I am not sure exactly what I would perform to fool P&T. But even though they are legends in magic - I would imagine the average knowledgeable poster on here would be harder to fool. Since P&T are too busy to keep up with the latest trends in close-up magic and (in particular) card magic. Hell even that Matthieu Bich trick that fooled them was probably one of those "trick of the year" type threads that had hundreds of responses on here. It was another trick that attracted a lot of attention amongst magic nerds long before it was featured on the show. But I agree with you. The ideal trick would be one that seemed to suggest one method when in fact an entirely different method was involved. As such - when P&T call you out on that method you could immediately show they were wrong. Leaving the sneakier method intact. The problem with the bluffs that Jay Sankey used was that even if he got called out on them - he was still not in a strong position to prove them wrong. Take his 'Rising Card' effect. If P&T called him out for using threads - he could tell them they were wrong. But - if they examined the case - they would quickly find the even simpler method involved. To me - that is not a good bluff - since the bluff itself draws heat in such a way that the real method could easily be found out with a cursory examination of the props. Just off the top of my head - and just thinking about Sankey effects for a moment. I would consider using 'Final Countdown' which is on page 1367 of Volume 3 of 'The Definitive Sankey'. P&T are familiar with memorized decks. And I would perform this effect as if I were performing a standard memorized deck effect. Insisting the deck only be cut and not shuffled. And then just before the ending of the effect - I would hand out the deck to be shuffled - just before I find the selected card. Hopefully that would throw them off. I would probably tell them that I will use the name of my magician uncle to spell to the card. And then spell out "S I M O N -- A R O N S O N" as an inside joke for P&T to show I am not using a memorized deck. A few years ago - I took an interest in magician foolers. But now I don't really bother anymore. If I was determined to fool P&T - I am not sure exactly where I would start. Digging out an old trick by Charles Jordan might be a good first step since his material is so old it is new again. And a lot of it is still clever enough to fool modern magicians. Leo Boudreau is another excellent creator whose work will catch out magicians. But even that is over complicating things. Your best bet would be to work through this very forum and see what marketed tricks has received a lot of praise from magicians in recent years. And then simply perform that. Since P&T are not magic forum nerds in the way a lot of us are. But like I say - the ideal trick would be one that gets P&T to commit to one method. So that when you disprove that method - you leave them with nowhere else to go. |

Sankey is a brilliant creator, a great performer and a really genius marketer. By not saying anything, he created yet another way to market his products and create buzz 9 months after his appearance.
Bravo Jay! I don't even like Sankey, but you have to give credit where it is due. James

Based on what I've just seen I would say that Jay fooled them so I don't understand why your giving him a hard time.
Well done Jay Sankey is what I say and without Jay and his magic the community would miss out on some wonderful material from a truly great magician. |

I hope everybody realizes that Jay Sankey is a relentless marketer, and this is first and foremost a marketing tactic to get people talking and thinking about him and his material right before a high-commerce holiday.

His performance on the show was really dull.
And I find his reaction incredibly childish. This is a lack of respect to P&T and, above all, to the public. |
