When I was a kid I got some magic kits and effects given to me as gifts from a company named Reiss Magic. These were inexpensive items that you could find in a toy or variety store. There was one, however, that I really liked and used all the time. It was a large plastic candle with a "special" wick. About five seconds after you lit the candle, the top of it it would spring up from the base and reveal a small banner with a selected card on it.
Unfortunately, I lost this prop somewhere along the line and have never been able to find another. I don't even think the company is even in business any more. If anyone out there knows the effect I'm talking about or knows where I can get one, either reply here or PM me. It's not like this is an end all be all effect, it's just that it was a big part of some of the first real performances I did and is kind of a sentitmental thing. Thanks in advance for any help. That trick is called Magic Act 22 "The Magic Candle" by Reiss Games, Inc. It was marketed in 1976 and was available in stores like JC Penney, Sears, Bloomingdales, etc.
Reiss Games, Inc. was eventually sold in 1986/87 to a toy company based in Canada called AMAV. AMAV continued to manufacture the Reiss magic tricks under the brand The Great Houdini Magic for a couple of years; however, that I know of, The Magic Candle was not continued by AMAV. AMAV was then acquired by an Israeli toy company in the late 90's called Diamant Toys. They, apparently only manufacture the "Hat Full of Magic" set (the original Reiss Games version came out in 1976). Diamant's version is not identical to the original from what I've learned researching onine. I have had some luck since 2005 finding and purchasing just about all of the Reiss Games, Inc. magic sets on eBay with the exception of The Magic Candle, the Gypsy Necklace (Magic Act 17)and the Disappearing Coins (Magic Act 15). But I keep looking with the hope that someday I might come across them. For a bit more info about Reiss Games, Inc. and their magic sets I have a post under the thread "What happened to Reiss magic?" on this website. Regards, Robert Manning |
