It used to be that you could refer to a CSB coin set as
Juan, Lee and Phil with everyone easily identifying with the different coins. Today I am not sure. One thing we are learning form the refugee traffic in Europe is that one cannot make assumptions about ethnic, religious, language, political or education on visual appearance alone. This could be a story line for several coin effects using standard gaffs in a new way: C/S, CSB, Scotch/Soda, etc. Say you have a wooden bowl representing a boat just washed ashore in Greece. Dump out two copper, two Brass and three silver coins. Casually show all sides as they are arranged on the table -- but how? You know nothing about these people except that they have to be sent to different rooms or camps. Since you are afraid of terrorists and criminals you split up the pairs into two rooms, one copper, one brass and a couple of silver in each empty box. Your boss comes in and says this won't work -- you can't decide on appearance. You leave the brass coins in each box since they are apparently leaders -- at least their mouth is always open. (hole). The others are assembled in the center, then randomly distributed back into the rooms to avoid any racial or religious discrimination, three in one car and four in the other. These two groups are send off on different trains. But a UN advisor shows up with paperwork showing that the two folks with brass are married and should be together. The two dark coins are bothers who ran an orphanage and are helping the three kids escape starvation and abuse. Boy did you mess up! No -- magic happens to those pure in heart and intent. One train car has only the Brass couple. The other has the other five! All you need is knowledge of the old Bunko count, a C/S/B and an Exp [ (silver or copper) Just an idea ...

Refugees in a boat, in camps, put on trains... I can't do that as funny. Best to those who can sell that as comedy.

That is beyond Politically Correct, why on earth would anyone say such things. People are starving and dying, and to think that you could use these horrible events as a entertaining patter story, is outrageous to say the least.
I probably missed your routine for the Titanic sinking. Got any good routines for the Holocaust, Pearl Harbor, Hiroshima, tsunami. Really, what were you thinking. |

At last some response-- but I am surprised at you two. Both of you know form my previous posts for years that this is tongue in cheek.
Certainly no suggestion that it is a comedy routine, or that it is more than "could be a story line." Most posts on the Café' push performance magic as being "for entertainment" rather than anything with an affect or being thought provoking. How news programs (sic) are infomania productions catering to making light of tragedy around the world -- entertaining people over telling the truth. The political debates are truly comedy and an indication that the American public desires entertainment over rational argument or concern over bigotry and inhumanity. So, how far can a magician go to use tragedy and bigotry to entertain? What should be the role/obligation of a magician in selecting patter to convey a message? I have presented an extreme patter line to hopefully cause performers to consider how much they select story line to cater to audience whims or "what is popular." The original Bunko Block routine was insulting to Chinese. Many popular magic effects are demeaning to women. Do either of you perform an effect with a message that bigotry is bad? Do either of you use your influential power as a magician to illustrate that you can't judge another person by appearance? Besides -- my pointing out that an effect could use such a story line and appear magical in no way indicates what I personally think about the tragedy and plight does it? Why would either of you project that any magic effect indicates the personal views of the performer? It is all about entertaining people, right?

So, Jonathan, do you feel there is no allegorical component or possibility for a magic effect?
Just as easy, yes. As meaningful? As entertaining? As magical? When one does sponge bunnies should they say, "two lumps of squishy stuff?" What would the humor be without the multiplying bunny image?

Your themes and stories are yours - whatever works for your audiences.
your tack on refugees may work - I just don't see it being so good for me. Same for secret swiss banker who moves money from Yuan to Pesos - so his clients can collect interest in the US in dollars. So far, not for be but really it's whatever works for you.

PC is making people mindless, soft, un-individuals. The refugee patter... can't get any more whack than that. Period.
