Especially the drawing of the door. That to me is the part that took the longest to get down. I just performed this for the lady who cuts my hair last night and I had her try to open the door after I showed her how. When she tried the door knob rubbed off. She looked at it and said "uh oh something is not working". I looked and as I erased the door I said "Oh that's right the door only opens for magicians." She just watched as I erased the door and then started to laugh and said Oh my gosh! It was a lot of fun. This is a wonderful effect and is fun to perform.

One more point to remember. Just because an effect is easy to perform does not mean you should slack off on the practice. I always practice this effect several times before I know I'm going to perform it. I have a family get together tomorrow and I will bring this with me. I will practice this tonight and then tomorrow before we head out I will have practiced this more. So although this is easy nothing replaces practice, practice, practice.

I drew my door on in permy marker exactly as the gimmick. I just get them to inspect box, drawing before I perform the effect. Much easier and no requirement to carry marker pen.

I think the drawing, opening, then finally erasing is what really creates interest and sells this trick so for me it's definitely worth the small amount of extra effort. |

I suppose you could mime drawing the door and then show it, but I agree that the visual of drawing and erasing is worth the extra effort. Getting a lot out of this one!

Drawing the door is not hard just 4 lines and a circle that's it. You just need to know the spots to draw to. You can mark these spots if need be with a red marker. But I agree it is better to draw the door in front of them then erase it.

The fact that you can open the door and they can't makes the effect more of a puzzle rather than a "magical" story that you're choosing to share with them. I honestly see the erasing of the door as the climax to a series of unexpected and impossible moments. I know that sounds a bit lofty but that's what I was aiming for The drawing and erasing of the door, I feel, are integral to the effect, particularly as these are the parts the stick in the mind of your audience and draw the focus away from the actual mechanics of the trick. I've performed this countless times over the years and drawing and erasing are the elements that always stand out when the audience recount what they've witnessed. Also, I'd imagine there's a much great chance of having your box damaged as your participant struggles to force open the door that's still on the box. I'm very much a proponent of making an effect your own so, of course, it's entirely up to you how you choose to perform it and what suits you best. I just think you might be missing out on some pretty strong magic for the sake of carrying an extra pen. Easy isn't always best imho. |

Spot on, Roddy. I totally agree. I think I remember you showing me this effect at blackpool like three years ago. Great trick!
